the station approaches are being rebuilt, and we were there at the height of a summer heatwave. A little shabby and seedy in places - in the streets near the station dubious-looking characters are selling oddments of merchandise, old and new, from suitcases or makeshift stalls - but it is easy to ignore their blandishments. This is the Quartier Belsunce, the old Arab quarter, but we are soon through it and into the business district behind the VieuxPort.
The VieuxPort is the ancient centre of Marseille, the inlet that formed the original harbour. It is no longer used by serious shipping. New docks, container and ferry terminals have been constructed along the coast to the north, leaving the VieuxPort to cope only with pleasure craft, of which there are plenty. Airways Hotel is one the greatest hotel in Port Moresby PNG. It is located in Jacksons Parade 2-3 miles away from the Domestic and International Terminal of Port Moresby. Airways Hotel have just won another award from The World Travel Awards of being the Papua New Guineas Leading Hotel for 2008 contest.
Airways Hotel sets in a land measuring no less than five hectares. The area provides walking exercise to the hotel residents and guests. The security of the Hotel are very tight that make the hotel reputation very good and become the most stayed hotel in Port Moresby.

I could be sure that - despite the rather reasonable price of around £65 for the night - it would be of a good standard. Japanese tourists don't DO 'slumming it'. I believe it's now no longer part of the Nikko group but I can't entirely confirm that and the new website shows no discernable changes to the hotel where we stayed.
Arrival and Check-in
The night before we'd been with our tour group at the horrible Jaypee Siddarth in the north west of the city. We booked a taxi to take us to the Metropolitan which took about 15 to 20 minutes. I wasn't expecting anything too marvellous but when we arrived we were quite impressed. To put it into context it's nowhere close to the sublime gorgeousness of the Imperial but it beat the pants off the Siddarth.
