'Wicked' is the story of what happened in Oz before Dorothy arrived, why is the Wicked Witch wicked? Why is she green? How the scare Crow became, and the Tin Man, and how the Lion found his voice, why are the Ruby Slippers so special? We also find out how Glinda the good witch, got to be so good.

The week we were in New York was the last week that Indina Menzel was playing Elphaba due to the fact that she is very big in the world of musical theatre the show was sold out. We had two options for getting tickets, the last minute lottery or cancellations, to double our chances we decided to queue for both. The show is on at The Gershwin Theatre, located on 51st street between Broadway and 8th avenue, we weren't called out in the lottery and so decided to stay in the cancellation queue that was growing by the minute. We had decided before that we were prepared to pay full price of $100 each for a ticket as we were desperate to see it and knew that we would probably only get cancellations on the full price tickets. As the time ticked on the more worried we became having stood in line for three hours already we were getting restless, we started chatting to the people beside also from the UK and they explained that they had tickets for the following days matinee but hadn't realised that the time of the show clashed with their flight home, so they were hoping to get a refund or exchange their tickets for the show that night. Well our ears pricked up and we offered to buy the tickets off them for the following day, they agreed and so we got our tickets at $100 a piece.
London Production:
If you are going to New York and want to see this show I suggest you book in advance because it is still really popular and gets booked up fast. A West End production is opening at the Apollo Theatre, London Victoria on 27th September 2006, I am sure it will be just as good as the production I saw, advanced ticket sales are all ready at a staggering £1, 700,000. Ticket prices range from £15 - £55 and can be booked online with ticket master.
The two leads:
Elphaba: Was played by Idina Menzel, Idina played 'Maureen' in the original Broadway cast of 'Rent' and is huge in the world of musical theatre, we were lucky enough to see her in action. What an amazing voice, a lot of Elphaba's solo songs have a high long end notes and she totally blew me away. Elphaba is the Wicked Witch of the West and through this musical we watch her from birth and find why she ends up so Wicked.
Glinda is the Good Witch, we learn that Elphaba and Glinda used to be good friends but why does one turn out good and the other so evil?
More familiar characters from The Wizard of Oz are also in this story The Lion, The Scarecrow and The Tin Man as well as The Wizard of Oz himself.
Music:
All of the songs in this musical help to tell the story of the Wicked Witch of the West, we start at the end with the opening number 'No One Mourn The Wicked', the wicked witch has just been killed by Dorothy's house and the people from the land of Oz are celebrating the witches death, all that is but Glinda the good witch. The story then goes back in time to the birth of Elphaba the wicked witch, but she wasn't born wicked, just green. Elphaba goes of to school and we learn that her dream is to work with the Wizard of Oz, she express's this longing with her amazing solo number 'The Wizard and I'. Glinda is sent to the same school as Elphaba and the two girls are told that they are to share a room together in the great duet 'What is this feeling' the two witches meet and find out that they don't like each other. As time goes on they learn to help each other, Glinda tries to help Elphaba become more popular and sings a catchy number called 'Popular'. But as time goes on and they start growing up Elphaba realises it is not just her green skin that is different she has special powers to and it is not long before she is summoned by the wizard. Will her dream to work with the wizard come true? How does she meet the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion? And how did she end up with those Ruby Slippers? I would love to tell you more but I don't want to spoil it for you, all I can say is the singing is fantastic, hairs on the back of your neck good! I actually came out singing several of the songs, they are very catchy, inspiring and captivating, you are left wanting more.
Set, Costumes and Special Effects:
The set and costume are utterly amazing, transforming you to the land of Oz, but a darker version than the one Dorothy found in The Wizard of Oz, the special effects are amazing with flying and explosions it is a thrill every minute, this show is truly magical and transports you into a different world.
Conclusion:
This show is a big hit on Broadway and is destined to be a big West End hit as well, I recommend this musical to anyone who loves the Wizard of Oz, it is suitable for children but may be slightly scary at points for children under 8 years old.
There is so much I want to tell you but can't because it will totally ruin it for you! Hope this has been of some help! Go see it! Lizzie X
Advantages: Good musical, great characters, fun Disadvantages: None really
Are we born Wicked, have bad people been Wicked all their lives or are they just a product of their upbringing and the circumstances put upon them?
This past weekend I went to see the musical Wicked with my husband. The show is being played at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, London. The nearest tube stop to this theatre is Victoria. If you are planning to go soon do
check the tube dates/times as the Victoria lined is currently beingworked on over ... ...use an alternative line to get there. The theatre itself is a Grade II listed building which first opened in 1931 as a cinema and then has been
running as a theatre since 1981.
The story is based on the best-selling novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, a re-imagining of L. Frank Baum's classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz from the
perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz.
In my opinion it ...

Advantages: Spellbounding, magical, great for kids and adults Disadvantages: changes your perception on the classical wizard of oz
This musical will change your perception on 'the wizard of oz' for sure!!! forget the wicked witch of the west, after watching this
musical you will empathize with the wicked witch rather than hate her!!!
this musical opened on broadway in 2003 and i was lucky enough to get free tickets to go see it through the acting academy i was studying at. Not knowing what it was really about or even heard of the original book i decided to go after hearing ... ...my boyfriend went to see this muscial we nothing about.
I was blown over and spellbounded!!!! mind the pun! This truly is magical.
Now the show has come to London and seeing the cast over here i have to be biased and say the original was fantastic! But i don't mean to say the cast here isn't strong as i know the orignal american lead came over here to do the run for a while (she's married to tay diggs!)
The 'good' witch has a touch or should i ...

Quick review of New Musical Wicked
I found this play very entertaining and enjoyable. It certainly appeals to the kids, as its bright, colorful and fun. It has an element of romance to it, and a pleasant ending to it. We really enjoyed attending this play, and the music was fantastic. The storyline goes around 2 girls who met at school and their lives got connected in a weird way. I forgot to mention that the play has a comedy/fun element to it, with many nice jokes. ;) Njoy.
certainly worth seeing and worth every penny.
have fun ...

Advantages: Impressive set design. Twisted take on Oz. Lovely greenery. Disadvantages: Slightly rushed second half?
Took the missus to see a preview in London at the Apollo Victoria. Although initially reluctant to see it - she loved it (and so surprisingly enough did I). I like musicals but was expecting this to be a bit of a borefest like Lion King (ie telling almost exactly the same story as the movie).
Instead I found it a clever, witty and twisted take on the Wizard of Oz - part prequel/part comtemporaneous to the original. For a musical there's some quite ... ...The set design was amazing - as was the choreography, lighting (spell casting) and sound design (Wizard moments). Unusually there wasn't really a duff song either.
Storywise it developed really well in the first half but maybe a little rushed towards the end once it caught up with the events in Oz.
Acting wise - both of the leads were very good although the lass playing Glinda perhaps slightly weaker.
Little ones won't really get the story but ...

Advantages: beautifully set, sung and danced Disadvantages: very long and not the happiest of story lines and heavy score
I went to see the musicalWicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre opposite London's Victoria Station late last year. The show is now in its second successful year after much publicity when it first opened. People are often in two minds about the show, they either like it or not. Most people I've spoken to loved the show but I didn't intend to pay up to £60.00 for a top price seat to find out. However, chance would have it that my favourite radio station was running a competition and I happened to win two top price tickets for the show. It turned out that I had to contact the production company for house seats. It's nice to get comps occasionally.
The show started almost on time when my friend and I went. There's always a short delay so we weren't particularly worried. The seats we were in were pretty good, Stalls, row G in the middle ...
Advantages: cast, soundtrack, atmosphere Disadvantages: prices, only London
The Bill and Grange Hill.
Glinda was acted fantastically by Dianne Pilkington, She has a much softer voice than Khadime, but not weak in the slightest. She suited her character, and most certainly developed her in such a phenomenal way throughout the production. Pilkington has appeared in other musicals such as Cats and Beauty and the Beast, but has also had a few television roles too. Wicked has such a memorable cast, each character rich in depth and power!
Of course, not only does Wicked have acting, but music too (after all, it is a Musical!). In my opinion, it seems to have one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. Throughout the production, we heard many amazing songs and pieces I simply cannot get out of my head! These include songs such as the Wizard and I (sung my Khadime), and Popular (Pilkington). This obviously could not have ...
Advantages: almost everything, a great musical Disadvantages: a little scary in parts, ,crowded theatre entrance
props, terrific theatre, superb storyline, What more can I say?! The whole musical is the best i have seen by far and I would encourage anyone to go and see it. Tickets, the last I checked were in the region of £30-£60 from ticketmaster. and at that price it is well worth going to see. I really do I hope you go to see it, and am pretty sure you're love it if you do. Two final words, excuse the bad and very overused pun:-"It's Wicked!!!"
