Forget Katrina

Advantages: Great City so much history
Disadvantages: Katrina has left its mark

...and majestic place known as New Orleans. This may be a long review, and for that I apologise in advance, however I don’t want to write multiple reviews about the different places you can see and visit, I just feel its fitting to fit it all into one large informative review, which will hopefully attract people to visit this place, or to at least get some idea of what the culture, lifestyle is al about, what there is to see and do and so on. New Orleans ...
.../> History:

New Orleans City is the largest city in the state of Louisiana, and is one of the major US ports in America. It’s evident that New Orleans has a French feel to it, and obviously this is natural considering the French found the city in the early 1700’s.However, during the 1800’s the city was captured by the Spanish, until Napoleon sold the land to the US in 1803. The European influence is still evident today, with the existence ... more

2007: New Orleans is recovering & worth visiting!

Advantages: Still the most beautiful city in the US
Disadvantages: Hurricane Katrina

...Katrina did its job on New Orleans. I've been back there several times since the storm, and have a few thoughts. I myself am an expatriate New Orleanian. Born and raised there, I've lived away for several decades, but still have ties and visit occasionally. As it happened, one of those visits was on the weekend before Hurricane Katrina hit. I've been back three times since then, and have seen the city slowly put itself back together. There's no ...
...still lives. In typical New Orleans fashion, Bourbon Street was one of the first areas of the city to get electricity back, and the first thing they did was to sell drinks to the rescue workers. It's also popular for tourists to book what are locally called "disaster tours" where they drive through the most devastated parts of the area: the Lower Ninth Ward, Gentilly, Lakeside, New Orleans East. and Saint Bernard Parish. Ghoulish as it sounds, it's ...

A Kiss on the Lips from a Tart With a Heart

Advantages: Friendly, frenetic and fun.
Disadvantages: Too much partying can be harmful to your health (or so I'm told)

Your first New Orleans kiss will come as you step outside from the air-conditioned halls of Louis Armstrong Airport. The warm, humid kiss of Louisiana. The hot and sticky breath of your southern soon-to-be lover will caress your face, and within moments, you’ll be struggling out of your clothes. Try to keep some control. It may be a party town, but even in New Orleans, cab drivers would prefer their fares to be decently clad, at least part of the ...
...Finding a bed in New Orleans isn’t difficult, except during Mardi Gras (Early March for 2003). The city is full of hotels, ranging from the opulent to the offensive, from the heart-stoppingly expensive to the downright bargain-basement. The French Quarter, where much of the tourist action is to be found, has many hotels and guest-houses, but none of these is particularly suited to the traveller on a budget. If money is tight, have a look across the ...

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Advantages: Compact city, good food and music, friendly people
Disadvantages: VERY HOT during the summer months

...the southern state of Louisiana, New Orleans is like a good gumbo..... a little bit of this, a little bit of that and A LOT of Hot Stuff! History: Many first time visitors are surprised by the definate European feel of the city. The architecture alone provides days of touring in itself. The reason for this Continental flavour comes from it's close ties to France and Spain. Louisiana was claimed for French king Louis XIV in 1699 and is the only ...
...more than one century. New Orleans is often called the "Crescent City" because it was founded on the bend of the Mississippi River. This unusual shape causes locals and visitors to become confused occasionally, as there is no traditional "north, south, east, or west" mode of getting around. Some streets in the city begin at one end parallel, and end up perpendicular. What to do? Going to the French Quarter is a MUST! It can easily be toured by ...

Mardi Gras and all that jazz

Advantages: Only one hour's flight from Tampa
Disadvantages: We found none

...about taking a trip to New Orleans to see the Mardi Gras and listen to some real jazz?” “Sounds like good idea, when do we go?” said I, lazily turning over to even up my tan. Harry had seen an ad in the local paper for a three night stay in New Orleans, flying from Tampa, at a very reasonable price. At the time we were staying with two friends near the Gulf Coast of Florida, well away from the razzmatazz of the Magic Kingdom and ...
...to “The Big Easy”, as New Orleans is known. Taking a taxi to our hotel, we were given a history of the city by the talkative taxi driver and a list of places to visit. When we complimented him on his knowledge, he said, ”No problem, it’s all part of our training.” As we were on an early morning flight, we arrived at our hotel in time for breakfast and a full day ahead of us. It is traditional to begin the day with coffee ...

New Orleans

Advantages: Friendly people, relaxed atmosphere. Be prepared to party, and party hard!
Disadvantages: Keep away from the tacky and overpriced tourist area.

My visit to New Orleans was pretty atypical, myself and a friend hired an aircraft and flew ourselves there from Georgia. For any pilots reading this, the trip was a good one, flying IFR and using Houston Centre for Flight Following and a Radar Service. being typically American aviation, the service was excellent and efficient, and despite being two semi-lost Brits in a single engined aircraft we never had the feeling that they were giving us anything ...
...Here we found the real New Orleans, friendly interested people, in fact, we'd stumbled on a local pub. Felling suitably refreshed we made our goodbyes and found ourselves wandering to a bar that had been recommended to us by no less a personage that Charlie himself. Molly's is an open fronted establishment that specialises in locally brewed beers. It was the closest thing to a real Ale pub I've ever come across in the States. The service was more ...

Cafe of My World

Advantages: Pleassant environment, wonderful coffee accompanied by great beignets.
Disadvantages: Its in far flung New Orleans.

In case anyone complains that this should be in the cafe category, I had asked for this to be created in a new cafe category for New Orleans. Unfortunately, this has not happened. I don't know what to do ... anyway, onward with the story ... Cafe du Monde ... is a famous landmark in New Orleans. Ask anyone there. It was in the movie Runaway Jury starring both John Cusack and Rachel Weisz. It has served as a turning point of my life and I thought I'll share this little cafe with you. Extremely Short History ----------------------- The original Cafe du Monde was started by Fred Koeniger in 1862. In 1942, it was bought be the Fernandez Family. Til this day, it is still owned by the Fernandez family and Cafe du Monde serves their infamous coffee and beignets in the original coffee stand in the French Market area of New Orleans ...

Fantastic French Quarter Hotel

Advantages: clean, friendly, great location
Disadvantages: not the cheapest on offer, but worth the money

The Maison Dupuy hotel ofers everything you could want from a hotel stay in New Orleans. Situated 30-seconds from lively Bourbon Street, it is right in the heart of the French Quarter yet removed enough that the late-night partiers do not cause any intrusion. Our room was spotless, comfortable (the beds were fantastic!), and overlooking the main courtyard below which housed the swimming pool, hot tub, and a seating veranda from which to sit with a drink and enjoy the Louisiana sunshine. There are plenty of facilities on-hand as well, from restaurants and bars to free internet access and valet parking. For the final few days of a long two-week trip, it offered us the perfect base to relax, recharge, and then head out to enjoy the unique delights of the French Quarter and New Orleans in general. ...
