If you can get over the smell and seedy side streets New Orleans and especially Bourbon St. are simply the best place to party in USA.
A few years back i took a gamble on this place and to my surprise it had everything i wanted for a short break. The nighlife is legendary, the building are beautiful and there's plenty to do during the day.
Nightlife: You can have a great time - straight, gay or both. A personal favourite is Razoo's on Bourbon that has awesome drink offers 3 for 1 during 11am-9pm. The hurricanes are great but be careful those things can put you on your back. So dance like nobody watching, sing like nobody is listenting, drink like nobody is counting and you'll be in heaven here!!!!
Culture: I did the odd tourist thing: A Ghost tour was very interesting and could be scary for little kids - not me of course:) The sea life centre is good but you can't spent more than a couple of hours there. Casino is poor if you've ever been to Vegas so I'd go for a swamp tour if you have one thing to do. Make sure you checked out the offers that are on because prices vary between companies.
Food: Well for me there's only one place to eat and that's the Red Fish Grill on Bourdon. Unlike the others restaurants on Bourdon (which can be disappointing) Red Fish Grill offers high quality food at just a few more $. The house special of Hickory Grilled Redfish is simple fantastic. The decor is cool and the service is brilliant. For those wanting a little something different the BBQ Alligator is great too but do it before your swamp tour!
Safety: We'd be warned about being careful but it's just the usual things you should do in every major city: Don't stray off the beaten track and keep wallets well hidden. The locals are generally friendly, especially at night!
Accomodation: My knowledge is limited but what i do know - I like. I've always stayed at the Ramada Inn On Bourbon. The location couldn't possibly be better . It's clean and the staff are friendly and the pool in the courtyard is great on those hot sticky Lousianna Days. The price is reasonably about $90 per night and you won't need a taxi.
Overall advice: if you get the chance get away from Bourbon and see the whole city and surrounding areas do it really is nice and there's some great shopping to be done. However, if your there just to party you won't be disappointed.
p.s check the weather report - when it rains it really rains!
