...on vacation is always special. All of a sudden you are far away from home and when you get out of the airport there are new sounds, new smells and lots of new things to see. We have been to Bangkok before but it is still fascinating to come here and see all the traffic, the way they drive and so on. But be aware: when you land at Don Muang airport there are lots of people waiting for you after you go through customs. These people all want to know if you have booked your accommodation, if you have transportation to get to town and so on. We rented a little minibus for 800 baht to get us to our hotel and most of the time in the bus was spent looking out the window.
Our hotel was as mentioned earlier booked by Tom. We had originally wanted to stay at the Bayoike Sky tower (the tallest building in Bangkok) but Tom said that it was not a very good...

Advantages: Affordable luxury, gorgeous rooms Disadvantages: When the wind is blowing the wrong way, you can smell the pongy river from the pool
...that when we decided to get married in Thailand in April 2003, there was no hesitation in booking the PB for the first four nights at the start of our trip, as well as the by now obligatory last night to ease the pain of going home.
Before I divulge my experiences, here's some background information on the hotel...
The PB is one of seven super-luxury hotels in the prestigious Peninsula hotel chain. The other six are located in New York, Chicago, Beverley Hills, Beijing, Manila and famously, Hong Kong, where I would love to go if I could ever afford it! A flashy website provides all the photos and information you could possibly need about the hotel group.
The PB opened in 1998 in direct competition, it's been said, with the Oriental Hotel (in other people’s book, the best hotel in the world, Asia, Bangkok, etc…) which is without...

...and sour soup, Thai green vegetable curry and mango and sticky rice for desert. The mango is served with rice cooked in coconut milk. Simple but tasty! And to top it all off, you will eat like a king for the equivalent of a couple of pounds. If you are not a fan of Thai food, don't panic. As with most countries, there is a wide selection of international cuisine available, all cheap and of a high standard. My friend who was with me in Bangkok is the worlds biggest junk food addict and she managed. And in the process I found out that even the pizza is good in Thailand!
SHOPPING
The shopping is very good in Bangkok. As you can imagine, it's not quite New York, but it does have some normal designer shops. However, these bring normal designer prices, and such things are not sold much cheaper there than in the UK. A better idea is to look...

As a fairly regular visitor to Bangkok, I always book flights and then sort out my own accommodation rather than get a package deal. Accommodation is cheap and plentiful there, we're talking £10 - £15 per night for what might equate to a three star... more
I choose this hotel as a result of a special offer on 'asiarooms'. On arrival we were promptly shown to our room by a very helpful member of staff.
The Deluxe room was a lot bigger tahn other hotels I have stayed in. However, it did seem a little... more
