New York City's best kept secret
Review of The Frying Pan, Pier 63, New York City by thelifeofphil83

Advantages: Friendly party atmosphere
Disadvantages: None

...kept secret" - that's how the plumber of the 'Frying Pan' described this old sunken vessel to me. 'The Frying Pan' is named after the 'Frying Pan Shoals', where the boat was used as a floating lightship. The vessel, after sinking, was pulled up off the ocean floor, cleaned of all the silt and shellfish, and turned into an entertainment attraction. Fitted with a dance floor and DJ booth, the boat has become a club with a difference. Although the outside ...
...are able to walk around the vessel, through the kitchen, into the old bedrooms and rusty corridors filled with machinery. With little portholes everywhere, the whole vessel is exactly as it was when it was pulled up from the ocean floor - except for the silt & sludge. This is an excellent place to meet down-to-earth, interesting and friendly people. Events are always going on here from regular club nights with loud music to art shows and film festivals. ... Big Apple Meet and Greet
Review of Big Apple Greeter, New York by schrodingerspussy

Advantages: Its free, you get a local view.
Disadvantages: You have to make a definate appointment.

I was fortunate enough to be in New York for 10 days last year on business. This unfortunately did mean that I was alone in the city when I was not at the offices. Before I flew out I decided to see what the Internet had to offer in the way of advice and visitor excursions. While I was quite happy wandering around Tiffany's alone, exploring the winding roads of Greenwich Village alone seemed a little too daunting. So I visited the web site (www.bigapplegreeter.org). ...
...They will usually cater for group from 1 to 6, though if you are a family of more they are willing to make exceptions. The idea is you tell them where you are staying, when you are going to be there. This means that they can contact you through your hotel. Which day you would like your greeter on, so they can see who is available. Through the week is possible as the people are from all walks of life, mine was retired and loved Manhattan so much ... WTC NYC 020102
Review of World Trade Center, New York by gollygumdrops

Advantages: .
Disadvantages: .

...day after day throughout the world and whilst I'm left feeling saddened, angry, and more often than not helpless, I carry on pretty much as before. I knew no-one who lost their life or was even in the World Trade Centre, the Pentagon, or even Pennsylvania that day, but having previously visited all those places the horror was far more real for me than any newsworthy event I'd seen before. New York was the biggest shock for me. The defining buildings ...
...there was a danger of people upping sticks and leaving the city permanently. I needed to go back and check that New York was still alive and well. Security checks leaving Heathrow were marginally tighter than usual, but the presence of security personnel seemed if anything to be lower key. There was definitely a more nervous edge to passengers, and co-operation with security staff was far less grudging than normal. Arrival at JFK was no more stressful ... Read review

A cultural experience in Harlem
Review of Harlem, New York by mendy

Advantages: nice people
Disadvantages: a lot of prejudices

After I heard about "The Harlem Gospel Singers" (they had some shows on German stages) a friend had the great idea to go to a Harlem Church in New York. Since we don't live too far from New York, that means no problem getting there. Before we went there, we didn't know how to go there. Should we go by car or by subway ? On the one hand, people told us not to walk around in Harlem when you are a "white" person and on the other hand people told ...
...be stolen. What should we do ? In the end, we took the subway. We heard from travel agencies that taking tours in Harlem in a group. That is safer than going independently. That we didn't want to do. We found the directions to the Gospel Church online. As we got off the subway, we felt a little bit uncomfortable. That's because we had heard too much negative feedback about Harlem. We were full of prejudice. As we travelled there the most people ... Read review

Its a Moviestar!
Review of Grand Central Station, New York by MILLSY99

Advantages: Antique Decor, The people, Shops
Disadvantages: Can get very busy

I walked through Grand Central quite a few times on my visit to NYC, what a place, busy at all times of the day, the ending of one of my favourite movies is filmed here, Carlito\'s Way along with Superman and many many more. The place is just so antique, I don,t think it ll have changed much the next time I go, the first time you walk your ll be in awe of the marble thats all around, I wish I could click my fingers and go there right now! The Roosevelt ...

If you do not fancy any seafood or are just passing through, there are various fast food outlets spread about the low levels of the station. So if your ... Read review
