Growing up in Colchester as children, me and my twin brother were insperable. Now, as adults we couldn't live more different lives if we tried! I live in the sleepy Yorkshire countryside, whilst he lives in the place that never sleeps, New York City. However we see each other 4 times a year, I go over there twice and he comes back here twice.
An Economy class return flight on Virgin Atlantic from London, Heathrow to John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airport in New York costs me around £400-£800, although it does vary greatly. Many flights also go to Newark Aiport in New Jersey, the state right next to NY. It is a 6-8 hour flight depending on weather conditions ect.
When I go to New York I obviously stay with my brother in his apartment in central Manhattan, but when me and three friends went earlier this year we stayed in the Times Sqaure Hilton, four of us shared a room with two double beds and cost £237 per night. We stayed for just two nights as we were on the way back from our main holiday in Vermont.
Travelling in New York is easy, the famous bright yellow cabs are everywhere you look and are fairly cheap. We did see several buses although we didn't get on any, the Subway (like the London Undergroud) was also resonable priced.
New York offers something for everyone. It is known as the shopping capital of the world and the clothes are so much cheaper than in England, New York is also home to the famous Macys, Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth Avenue shops.
Times Square- Lights brighter than you could possibly imagine. Full of shops, nightlife and resturants, also the 16 storey Hersheys chocolatr shop.
Central Park- Great for sunbathing, relaxing, picnics and sport in the summer, and winter sports in the winter! Horse drawn carts operate year round (I think!) and the zoo is open daily.
Empire State Building- You simply cannot go to NY without going to the top of the Empire Stare Building. The views from the top at night are breathtaking! Ques are generally long as in a post 9/11 New York, secruity is understandably very tight. It costs $17 to go right up to the 86th floor observatory.
Trump Tower- Its worth visiting just to see the Gold Toilets!
Statue of Liberty- Ferriers take visitors across to the island where she stands, however ques are long and if you only in New York for a weekend it may be worth just looking at it from afar.
Broadway- Some of the best shows in the world are shown in the theartres along this historic street.
Ground Zero- I was fortunate to visit the Twin Towers before that dreadfull day, now Ground Zero is a devasting place but I recommend going to pay your respects to all them innocent people who died. Rest in peace.
Where to eat? New York is packed with great resturant, as well as takeaway and fast food for as far as you can see. I highly recommend the Planet Hollywood in Times Square, the food is resonably priced and there is masses of movie memoribila to look at, and theres generally a celebrity dining there too! Booking a table is essential.
Safety. Once known for its high gun and crime rates, New York now a days is alot safer than it use to be, police are seen everywhere and I feel safer walking around in New York City than I do in my home town in Essex. I wouldn't recommend walking in Central Park alone at night though, mugging rates are still fairly high.
Overall, this is a wonderful city and I always feel sad to leave although I know I'll be returning again very soon. I'm very lucky to have a relative live there as it means no paying for a hotel. New York is truely magically and will live up to your expectations that you would have seen on the telly! If you get the chance...GO!
