Don't count on staying, even if you book
Review of West Side Inn, New York City by travelguyuk

Advantages: The location is OK
Disadvantages: Unhelpful staff, poor customer service. No guarantee of a room even with booking

...give the impression that the West Side Inn was a good place to stay if (and only if) the only thing you were looking for was a safe place to sleep. Make no mistake about it, this was the only thing I needed and so I booked a room for myself and my partner so we could travel the 3500 miles from the UK and see the sights of New York. A not surprising amount of review space has been given to just how unorganized this hostel is. My own experience was ...
...hotels the receptionist at the West Side phoned had a free room for the nights we were staying as I can't imagine any assistance would have been offered had this not been the case. No apologies were offered and the casual way we were told we would 'just have to stay somewhere else' combined with the number of travellers who have had similar experiences suggests this is regular occurance at the West Side Inn. Avoid. ... Read review

Relaxing in the Urban Jungle
Review of Giraffe Hotel, New York City by flatshandy

Advantages: location, breakfast available, free wine in the evenings
Disadvantages: noise, can be expensive at some times of year

...friendly without being overly familiar. Our room was cleaned every day by the time we returned and the doorstaff were always on hand to help flag a taxi. So was it worth it? Absolutely. We'd go back to the Giraffe in a flash - it's a great little hotel. ... Read review

YMCA West Side: 2 bathrooms for 92 people
Review of YMCA, New York by giacopare

Advantages: excellent location, it is really downtown NYC
Disadvantages: expensive, dirty rooms and unbelieably dirty decaying bathrooms

I had been to YMCA West Side in New York once ten years ago, before they renovated it, and I enjoyed it much. Thus last summer I went back there with my girlfriend without even having a look at the rooms. I wish I did not go there! Definitely I will not go there any more. I am 32 and since I travel quite a lot I can say I have some spirit of adaptability. However there's a limit to everything. The place where this hotel is locate is very good, ...
...of downtown New York. Unfortunately this is the only positive thing about YMCA West Side. PRICE: price is too high for what you get. 100$ for a twin bedroom is a bargain for the are you are going to stay, but it is a theft for what you are provided for. What's more YMCA demands you to pay in advance for the whole period you are going to stay. In fact I had reserved it for 5 days and had to stay there all those days, despite the problems, not to ... European tailored hotel in NY downtown
Review of The Amsterdam Inn, New York City by giacopare

Advantages: very clean, quiet, kind service, good area
Disadvantages: there is no elevator

...Jamaica St. was fairly acceptable, the other one near Columbus Circle was really horrible). When I eventually reached there I immediately felt as being in my country, in Europe. The area is really good, one of the most quiet areas of Manhattan, a few minutes from downtown. It is perfectly linked by buses and the underground. The place is really pretty, in may ways similar to the European style, and manages to satisfy our needs of European tourists, ...
...(with dozens of clear channels). The care for details was as high as we are used to find in European hotels, just as an example we were provided by two rolls of toilet paper wrapped in paper and a box of handkerchiefs. You can imagine the rest! BATHROOM: for the most cheap rooms the bathroom is shared. However there are two bathrooms on each storey, shared by average 12 people. Very clean they are cleaned twice a day. Basins work well since they ... Read review
