If you are travelling to New York City, it's well worth considering flying into Newark. Despite being located in another state, it's actually closer to the City than either JFK or LaGuardia - just a 20 minute train journey from Penn Station in the heart of midtown. It's also worth bearing in mind that flights into Newark from the UK are in my experience less busy than flights to the other airports.
The terminal links and the link to the train and bus departure points are excellent, and I found the check in and baggage collection procedures to be very efficient. Security however continues to be shockingly lax, given the measures in place here in the UK, though a police/military presence is highly visible for the concerned traveller.
The only real problem with Newark is the lack of facilities - it's a large and pretty souless building, as airports tend to be, and most of the food/retail outlets are very overpriced; again this is very much the norm. Pack some food, take a book, and save your money for the duty free!
My parents and sisters have often used this airport when coming to the UK, Zoe - coming into Birmingham or Gatwick or even somewhere in Scotland (Glasgow, was it? I forgot to ask...) - obviously Birmingham is much closer to Redditch - there are some nice sandy beaches in New Jersey, too, you know (not gravel and shingle like so much of the UK)... you could always give me a single word in my PRIVATE guestbook, if you felt so inclined. If you plan the Everything from 10-20 Thingywhatsit Christmas Challenge, I'll give you one if you like, too. jes ≈≈≈≈{; -)-{{:::{||||||<

You're right about the security - we flew to the US in Nov 2001, so you'd have expected it to be better. Not a chance! I don't imagine that things have improved much since then, either.

Good tip Zoe - it took me many many flights to NY before I worked this out myself, but now I always aim for Newark if I can - speed through the airport itself is in a different league to JFK! Kirstyxx
