Nearly British clubbing
Review of Twilo, New York by SophieD

Advantages: Excellent music, good atmosphere
Disadvantages: Grotty toilets!

If you're into hedonistic London clubs and looking for a night out in New York then Twilo's is probably your kind of place. It's a large busy club (expect to queue) which attracts some of the top British and American DJ's. It's not as dressy as some UK clubs but a few people were wearing outrageous clubgear. The atmosphere was well up for it but probably not as relaxed as clubs in the UK. It is one of the few places open all night (to 10 am...). ... Read review

Jazz the Way it Should Be
Review of Village Vanguard, New York by fuche_bu

Advantages: great acoustics, intimate setting
Disadvantages: can be overcrowded at times

The Village Vanguard started its run in 1934. This venerable establishment has been serving up great jazz for nearly seven decades. Many jazz legends like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and Charles Mingus have cut their teeth on the Village Vanguard stage. The list of performers here is a veritable Jazz Hall of Fame. This jazz club is located on 7th Ave in Greenwich Village. It's in a basement which lends an aesthetic ...
...people so it is intimate. I've seen performers such as Branford Marsalis, Don Cherry, Cecil Taylor and David Murray over the years. Most shows cost $15-20 (US dollars) cover charge plus a two drink minimum. It doesn't seem too steep for the pleasure of capturing live jazz in such an authentic, intimate setting. It remains a dark, smoky jazz hole resisting the temptation of yuppification. This venue provides America's most original art form in the ... Read review

Jamming in Tribeca
Review of Wetlands, New York by fuche_bu

Advantages: great live music
Disadvantages: Doesn't have the best lay out possible

The Wetlands Preserve has been a haven for hippies and Deadheads for over a decade. This club has continually provided jamband fans with great live music at affordable prices. The Club was founded with a Deadhead ethic. Many Dead cover bands play regular gigs here. They also feature many jam bands. Phish, Blues Traveler, moe., Spin Doctors, String Cheese Incident among others have graced the stage. They offer a diverse range of musical styles from ...
...and rap. Bernie Worrell of P-Funk fame and Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks from the Allman Brothers Band have done numerous gigs here. Wetlands also provides a forum for ecological and political issues. Many brochures and petitions are on display in the club. They sometimes have events geared toward benefitting these causes. This is part of the club credo to have a social conscience as well as to provide entertainment. This Tribeca club located ... Read review

Outstanding
Review of Sambuca, New York by Morgenhund

Advantages: Very reasonable, good service, good food
Disadvantages:

I went to Sambuca, an Italian family style restaurant with my cousins and we had a great meal at a more than reasonable price. The restaurant was busy and the service very attentive, and the atmosphere was great. The pasta was sublime and the meal is not one I will forget for a long time. The biggest surprise was when we got the bill, I was only about $25 per head. I took a card and have every intention of going back there. If anyone else is in ... Read review

East Village Watering Hole
Review of McSorley´s by fuche_bu

Advantages: lots of fun
Disadvantages: can be overcrowded

McSorley's is located on 8th Street in the East Village. It sits on the same block as Burp Castle and Brewskis which are two other beer havens on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. McSorley's is an Irish style pub which serves two beers on draught. There is a pale ale and a dark beer. They are both tasty beers but neither will really curdle the toes of a serious beer lover. This bar is a place to go when you want to quaff a few beers among friends. ...
...staff is pretty friendly. They seem well adapted to handling a large influx of patrons. A visit to McSorleys is essential for any beer lover making a trip to the Lower East Side. It has become an institution in New York City. While I can't honestly rave about the quality of the McSorley beers, I would state that they do have bottled beers and a full liquor bar. This is a fun place to go to have a few and let your hair down. ... Read review
