New York City is a vast package of neighborhoods, people and cultures. It is what you make of it.
It has something for everyone, even those who dislike the place.
If the pace in mid-town, meaning Times Square, the Theater District and many businesses, is too much for you, then try going uptown, up to the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, at 110th Street. Or try the outer boroughs.
Take a stroll through Central Park. No matter what you've heard about the crime, it's a beautiful park, accessible to all. And it's huge, as varied as the city itself. Wander away on a walking tour, away from the main streets. New York's mosaic of neighborhoods is amazing. One minute, you'll be in a busy commercial area; around the corner, you'll stumble into an ethnic neighborhood with families sitting out on the stoop as children play on the sidewalk or the street.
If you don't like the foreign languages spoken here, then you might have a problem. For some Americans, hearing other languages is somehow an insult to the country, because they forget that most of their ancestors spoke something else when they first came here.
The city is not all crime, mayhem, noise and traffic, though it has more than its share of those things. It is a thriving, striving city bent on yielding to no one. In fact, it doesn't really acknowledge the importance of any other area or people from elsewhere, which is why it has a reputation for arrogance. But it can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for visitors.
