Puzzling world - what a puzzle

Advantages: Optical illusions, fun, good for families
Disadvantages: It's in New Zealand, which is far

Puzzling World is a family friendly fun building full of optical illusions near Wanaka in New Zealand's South Island. It is a vibrantly coloured building that is readily visible from the highway and was suitable for small children and adults alike. I would have loved to spend ages here, but I only had time for a whistle stop tour because we were on a tour. Part museum, part exhibition, it has been there for over thirty five years now, so it can't ...
...world is located a few miles out from the town of Wanaka which lies on the edge of Lake Wanaka, a couple of hours drive north of Queenstown. This is in the Southern Lakes region of New Zealand's South Island, an area I recommend strongly for a visit - it reminded me strongly of the Rocky Mountains in Canada. Entrance fee Adult fees are NZD$9 (about $4) to go into the illusion room or the maze or $12.50 to go in both, with child fees $7 for ...

Coronet Peak Tandem paragliding: fly like a bird

Advantages: Flying, exciting
Disadvantages: A bit dangerous, expensive

...try and heard that the Coronet Peak Tandems paragliding was particularly fun - you go tandem paragliding with a pilot doing all the hard work and you just get to sit back and enjoy the views. The cost This isn't a cheap activity, even by the standards of New Zealand adrenaline sports. Paragliding cost NZD$179 (which was about £85) for what was scheduled to be a half day activity, but turned out to be a couple of hours more than that. Included ...
...the nearby mountain ridges of Coronet peak. These are high hills and also offer particularly good skiing in the winter. If you do paragliding in the winter, you can start from a higher ridge, because you can take the ski lift up. But the ridge we started from in their autumn is still plenty high enough and the wide u-shaped valleys offer stunning views. On the day I was flying, we were divided into two groups, each of which would have their own pilot ...

Shotover Jet- apparently the world's most exciting jet boat ride.

Advantages: Fun, excitement, safe, family friendly
Disadvantages: Expensive, a bit tame

Shotover Jet is the name of a New Zealand adventure company based in Shotover Canyon, near Queenstown, New Zealand. They offer what is apparently the world's most exciting Jet Boat right through the steeply walled canyon. What is a jet boat and how does it work? You may be wondering what jet boating is. Imagine, if you will, a cross between a hovercraft and a motor boat that can carry up to 28 passengers. These are very rapid boats that can ...
...the trip. Shotover Canyon Shotover canyon is a steeply walled narrow gorge, filled which white, churning water and a myriad of rocky obstacles, only some of which are visible above the water line. It is through this treacherous passage that the boats journey. Very rapidly. The pilots know their boats well, so drive extremely close to the walls for maximum adrenaline rush. You are being filmed for the duration of the ride by a camera at the ...

Zorbing in NZ -now I know what a hamster feels like in its ball.

Advantages: Fun, tame, exciting
Disadvantages: tame, a bit silly, a bit expensive

...was told the zig-zag water zorb was the best option, so that's what I went for. The cost At NZD$49 (about £20-25) for one ride, it's not a cheap way to pass the time, but it's a lot cheaper than most adrenaline sports; and in the spirit of “you get what you pay for”, whilst it is a whole heap of fun, it is also correspondingly extremely tame in comparison to bungee jumping. Restrictions When I was there, the maximum weight in the sphere ...
...and anticipation. Finally, my zorb arrived. The inner sphere sits cushioned with air springs inside the outer sphere so that there is about a foot gap between the two. The only way in and out is a narrow tunnel that you have to wriggle through headfirst in a most indelicate and inelegant manner. Then they added a few litres of warm water, and zipped me in to my very own personal hamster ball. When the route down was clear, the ball was released, ...

Shine on me little glow worms - Waitomo Caves, New Zealand

Advantages: An amazing natural light show
Disadvantages: Long way to go and quite expensive

WHERE ARE THE WAITOMO CAVES? We drove from Auckland to Rotorua and on the way we stopped at the Waitomo caves near Otorohanga on the North Island of New Zealand. The caves are about two hours south of Auckland and two hours west of Rotorua so it made a good break in our journey. I really knew nothing about these caves prior to our arrival and was expecting the typical limestone rock formations and variations on stalagmites and stalactites. When we ...
...GEOLOGICAL BACKGROUND: In the Waitomo area there are about three hundred know caves below the grass covered sheep filled hills. This limestone area was formed 30 million years ago when North Island was under the sea. Limestone is a rock which is formed by millions of dead marine animals built up over many millions of years. This part of the world has also been involved in vast geological movement, earth quakes and volcanoes. Cracks in the rocks created ...
