Newbury, site of two English Civil War battles, is at the cross roads of England - it sits at the junction of the M4, which connects London with Bath, Bristol and South Wales, and the A34, which connects Southampton, Portsmouth and the South Coast with Oxford, Birmingham and the North.
Newbury was also the site, in the late 1990s, of the "Third Battle of Newbury", when prostesters tried to halt or delay the building of a new by-pass. They failed, so now traffic on both the A34 and the M4 speeds past Newbury, well clear of the old market town.
But Newbury is worth a visit and can be a good place to stop off, whether for an overnight stay on your way from the North to France via Portsmouth, or on your way to the New Forest. There are several hotels and the Tourist Information Bureau (01635 30267) has lists of guest houses, bed and breakfast and self-catering accommodation. Newbury is also a convenient centre for touring, with lots of visitable places within an hour's drive, including Oxford, Winchester (the former capital of England), Avebury (walking among the standing stones knocks spots off peering through the wire at the more famous Stonehenge), Windsor, as well as some places of interest in and around Newbury itself.
One good place to stay is the Tile Barn House bed and breakfast (01635 254677), on which I've written another opinion in the "Destinations" section. One note of caution, its wise to book ahead for any accommodation round Newbury, which is also headquarters of Vodafone-Airtouch and one of the most prosperous towns in the UK.

Advantages: Comprehensive listings of local services, facilities, venues etc Disadvantages: Not much in the way of flashing lights and noises, but some would say this is an advantage!
