A Northern welcome
Advantages: Great sculpture Disadvantages: it all seemed a bit strange when it was first erected
Angel of the North
Heralding as I do from Newcastle, and having always thought of this as my home town regardless of where I have lived, I watched the erection of this structure with interest. Its completion in 1998 heralded much interest and it has recently been voted fifth modern wonder of Britain.
Built on a panoramic site on a hilltop, the angel is, to me, a symbol of "coming home". At the top of the hill where the angel stands to the right ... ...having visited it.
The angel itself was commissioned by Gateshead Council as a landmark sculpture at the entrance to Tyneside, and indeed, its open spread wings seem to welcome people to the region. The site was selected because it was on a former pit head, and this seemed to symbolise the rich mining tradition of the region. Indeed the artist himself, Andrew Gormley, made the observation that the fact that men worked in the dark beneath the ground ...

SHOPPING IN METRO STYLE!
Advantages: see review Disadvantages: see review
...hour’s drive of the Gateshead metro centre it is to this centre a head. The metro centre is the largest shopping centre in Europe with over 300 shops and 50 restaurants. I thought I would give you my thoughts and tips for getting the best out of a days shopping in this mammoth complex. Getting there. ************* I live about an hours drive to the north of the metro centre and usually travel by car. The metro centre is situated about 3 miles south ... ...easy to forget! The metro centre is really well served by public transport. From Newcastle central station trains run every 15 minutes and the journey takes just 7 minutes. The metro centre has its own station with undercover seating. Trains run along the Tyne valley as far as Carlisle and are frequent. In addition to the train service there are numerous busses that connect from all over the North East. For accurate times I suggest you take a look ...

Water fun whatever the weather!
Advantages: Fun for all the family, good slides, Disadvantages: Expensive, needs maintenence
Wet ‘n’ Wild is located in North Shields and is the UK’s largest water park. It is located 1 mile from the north side entrance/exit of the Tyne Tunnel on the A187 North Shields road. It is located directly opposite Royal Quays Shopping Outlet.
The Water Park
When you first go inside Wet n Wild you need to pay your entrance fee. You can hire a locker for 30p plus a £2 refundable deposit. The lockers are quite large and can easily be shared ... ...until you’ve paid and entrance is through a turnstile. Once inside, you can see the swimming area and slides and you need to go downstairs to the changing area. The changing area is a unisex area with cubicles to get changed in. The cubicles on the end of each row are slightly larger and it says these can be used for family changing. Regeneration really is a wonderful thing.
Advantages: stylish Disadvantages: It's cold most of the year
...others) which span the river Tyne from Newcastle on the North side to Gateshead on the South side and for a whole host of other attractions. The quayside is within easy walking distance (ten mins) of the City Centre, but be warned it is a steap uphill walk on the way back! There are many routes by foot and if you are willing to explore I suggest you try some of the steep windings stairways that run down from the City at various points. There are ... ...bridges: The Tyne Bridge: ******************

Experience Shopping at Eldon Square!
Advantages: Good Shops Disadvantages: Mainly highstreet stores
...I used to go to Eldon Square in the school holidays with my grandma and we would meet my sister and my nephews in Newcastle and go shopping. Therefore, for me Eldon Square has some happy memories as well as some great shops :)
Eldon Square is an indoor shopping centre located in the heart of Newcastle and as I am now studying in Newcastle I have been here quite often recently. Eldon Square first opened in 1976 and serves a catchment area of 2.7 ... ...It is lovely walking into Eldon Square on a cold day, as it is really warm (so especially good at this time of year!)
The entrance on Northumberland Street is on a bit of an incline and it's the usual type of flooring in indoor shopping centres (the type that always makes my feet tired!) I'm always tired after I've walked around Eldon Square looking at the shops. However, recently I've only been popping in to go to one particular shop so it doesn't ...
