Advantages: Very spacious and comfortable Disadvantages: Sill fairly limited number of destinations
Newcastle has grown in recent years into a sizeable international airport. It now serves a reasonable number of holiday destinations by chartered flights including all the major Spanish resorts and others like Florida, Cyprus, Italy (Naples), Turkey and a new service to Dubrovnik in Croatia. I have used it recently for a flight to Brussels with Sabena.

Now I am not saying I am the worlds most travelled person but I have been through a number of different airports in my time. Frankly there is little to choose between any of them. They all feel like, well, airports. They are usually hugely buildings which are like aeroplane hangers with carpoets and a few seats. The people in charge may put in the odd Costa Coffee bar or Burger King but the over all ambience is still distinctly airport.
Newcastle airport makes a pleasant change. OK you still know it is an airport but the shops, cafes and restaurants. In particular praise must go to Cushie Butterfields which was as good a pub as you would wish to find. The Food area is also refreshingly different offering Italian fare at Latinos, pizzas and pasta. It also has Sharwoods Taste of Asia with lots of curries and spicy dishes, The Deli with reasonably priced good sandwiches and Baxters Soup well I will leave you to guess what they serve here. Beyond the gate is Into The Blue another bar area.
There is also a well stocked Boots the chemists and W H Smith and the ubiquitous Costa Coffee Bars but it is the feel of the place that is different. Parking is easy for relatively short stays and no more expensive than for example Manchester. The airport is easily reached by car off the A1 and public transport also calls via the Metro link. Generally I found the airport ran well, check in was good, there were no queues at any of the passport or security areas. In this respect it was much better than Manchester which always seems not to have the space to cope with the capacity it has travelling through it.
All in all I was very impressed with Newcastle airport and for those living in the North East I would suggest there is no reason to look beyond your local airport.
Advantages: Small airport all within one big terminal building so easy to use Disadvantages: Not enough international flights
Ive used Newcastle airport to fly from all the time. I find it a compact little airport, with good facilities. I will try my best to describe this airport to people whom have not yet used it.
First of all the airport is located 8 miles to the north west of Newcastle centre. The airport is served every 15 minutes by Newcastles Metro Rail/tram system and the journey time is under 30 minutes.Other public transport including the bus is poor. There are ... ...cost about £15 and take depending on traffic 15 minutes.
The hotel about 1/4 a mile away from the airport is called the Britannia and should cost between £50 and £100 a night depending on how busy they are for this 3 star property. If this is full they is something like a travel lodge close by(but i cannot remember the name), and then The Toby and Novotel located by the A1 whcih is five minutes drive away.I recommend the Toby as a nice basic hotel ...

Advantages: Friendly and efficient, quick checkins Disadvantages: Some transfers may be needed on certain routes
Newcastle is 10mins away from home for me so I use it a great deal. I have used it both for business and pleasure so will describe the experience form both perspectives.
The airport itself is just outside Newcastle and is easily reachable from the A1 or by getting the Metro from Newcastle to the Airport Station. It is also well served by taxis and most of these tend to be very reliable firms.
It is a small Airport which has recently undergone a ... ...transfers may be necessary on some routes but it is becoming easier to fly direct. I have flown to Chicago and Boston with one transfer (Heathrow and De Gaulle) and have found that this is a reasonable experience. KLM do a very good flight to Chicago via Schipol which has a very short transfer time, however I do know a lot of people who have found that this means that luggage gets left behind!
It has a nice feel about it and is airy and clean. Car ...

Advantages: Very easy to reach, comfortable facilities, Disadvantages:
The airport itself has just undergone a multi-million pound upgrade and refurbishment and the new sleek glass exterior reflects the smart and effective service you can expect inside the terminal. The airport isn't huge, but this means that there are no problems with heaving luggage around the place. The check-ins are right in front of the entrance which is ideal if you've overpacked (as we all do) and you can't wait to get rid of your bags. Because ... ...and quick and you are then left to enjoy the airport's modest but comfortable facilities. Because Newcastle Airport isn't huge it hasn't got the teems of shops you can expect from say Heathrow, but there are sufficient shops to see you food, drink and any magazines or whatever you may want for your flight. There is a comfortable waiting area, which is supplemented by a small executive lounge for those of you who fly in suits =) The viewing area is ...

Advantages: Easy to get to, small so you can't get lost Disadvantages: Limited destinations
Being a bright young thing I decided I'd join the jet-set and explore my horizons (minus parents for the first time). By the time I'd checked the bank balance I realised I may have to tame my ambitions slightly and opted for the last minute bargain holiday to Mallorca flying from Newcastle Airport not quite the private airfield I had in mind!
I was however pleasantly surprised, the airport is incredibly easy to get to. It's far enough from town ... ...one main building you can't get lost in the car park sprawl. If you're making your way on foot from the local area you can get the metro service which has a designated airport stop. The metro also connects to Newcastle train station which has services to all over the country.
The airport itself is open and airy and the new extension adds to this. There's not many shops but you can sit and get decent food or a drink or watch the planes taking off ...

I've flown from 3 or 4 times now and think it's a really good airport to fly from. There is a large carpark, with reasonably priced airport parking. If booked in advance you can get 2 weeks parking for £68. The airport flys to many destination including Milan, Malaga, Gran Canaria, Dublin and Corfu. The check in has always been an easy process, I've never had any problems with baggage being lost or known anyone else too. There are plenty of things ... ...all day in the airport, the 2 hours before departure goes so quickly. There are a couple of nice pubs, whose prices aren't extortionate like you would expect. There is a few places to eat including Burger King, Greggs bakery and a food village.
There is a Boots to get any last minute toiletries you might have forgotten, WHSmiths for a magazine for the flight, Dixons if you've forgotten camera film or batteries and even a beauty salon where you can ...
