*****Newcastle - Always a City of Culture***** I wanted my next review to be something a little special, so what better to write about than my beloved home town on Newcastle. That's Upon Tyne, rather than Under Lyme. Just to be clear! I wasn't born here, but in a British Military Hospital ... Read review

ALWAYS A CITY OF CULTURE

Advantages: An amazing place to live or visit.
Disadvantages: none

...*****Introducing Newcastle*****

Newcastle is really the last big city before you hit border country.

As in Border between England and Scotland.

There are people who think Newcastle is actually in Scotland, but this is not so!!! It did, however, in Roman times, form a boundary between The Savage North (Scotland) and The Delicate South in the presence of Hadrian's Wall. Emperor Hadrian was a canny soul, ...
...long ago.

Newcastle is a vibrant city, full of life and colour and movement. Things are always changing in Newcastle, and yet somehow the atmosphere, the mood, the soul of the place is something that always manages to remain the same. It is a city that celebrates multi-culturism, which celebrates art and life and music and humour. It is a city home to over a quarter of a million people, and we're all just as proud as punch to call ... more

Yee alreet pet?!

Advantages: Lovely city with lots to do
Disadvantages: Can get very busy

Newcastle upon Tyne, often shortened to Newcastle, is a city in the county of Tyne and Wear in north-east England. Technically, people from Newcastle are Novocastrians, although the term Geordie is now more commonly used. I'm not actually from Newcastle but it's the nearest city to where I live (about 15 miles away) and I go quite often. Newcastle, known at the time as "Pons Aelius" was founded by the Roman Emperor Hadrian, whose Wall is still visible ...
...a surprisingly original name! - Newcastle itself was named when the 'new castle' was built!) ~ Sport ~ The City has a strong sporting tradition, being home to Premiership football team Newcastle United, and Guinness Premiership rugby union side Newcastle Falcons, for whom England's "(Rugby Union) World Cup winning hero" Jonny Wilkinson plays. Newcastle is of course home to St James' Park football stadium (Newcastle United) I am not a football ...

It's minus 15. Lets go out wearing a t-shirt!

Advantages: Loads to see and do in Newcastle and surrounding region
Disadvantages: Very busy, especially at weekends

I have lived in Newcastle all my life. I went to College and University in Newcastle and have sampled Newcastle's nightlife for as long as I can remember. Without wanting to sound biased, it really is a city that has something for everyone. The city ====== Built on the banks of the River Tyne Newcastle is a relatively small city with a population of about 250,000 (from the last census). Also generally included with the Newcastle area are parts ...
...Newcastle is very compact with pretty much everything to see and do within the city can be done by walking. For attractions further out of the city centre, Newcastle is covered by an extensive bus network and also a light rail network (the Metro), which covers the areas towards the coast and also to Sunderland (although I wouldn't recommend anyone went there). Newcastle also has the benefit of being very close the coast with the beaches of Tynemouth ...

City of Culture? An Insider's View

Advantages: It's the place I call home so I have the inside knowledge on this lively and friendly city
Disadvantages: Newcastle is in danger of disappearing up it's own backside

...reviews on my home city, Newcastle upon Tyne. It's a place I've always been quite touchy about; when I went away to university I was quite defensive on the subject because I feared that people would think less of me because of where I came from. I think part of it was to do with inverted snobbery, I looked down on my hometown, especially when I moved away and saw other places. I have to say, though, that at the time I left, Newcastle was a much ...
...When I left, Newcastle was a very down to earth place. Most people you met were from the city, in contrast to today as many companies are relocating to the north east because of ever rising costs in London and the south east. This has resulted in an increase in the number of people with a decent disposable income and retailers, house builders and leisure companies have taken advantage of this. Instead of shabby but homely pubs, the city centre is ...

Born within the "stench" of the river Tyne

Advantages: It has everything
Disadvantages: None

...of places in and around Newcastle only returning to the old homestead with my own family 9 years ago. "It has everything" seems to be a bit cheesy and yet Newcastle has. There are designer shops everywhere. Big department stores. The wonderful Grainger indoor market. Eldon Square, a vast shopping centre right in the middle of the city. And the best thing is that it is all within walking distance. Newcastle is a big town but everything is well grouped ...
...get anywhere quite reasonably. Newcastle is a town full of history. You have the Keep, where you can walk in and around bits of the old wall are dotted here and there. There is even a shop where when you go upstairs one of their walls is the old castle wall. If you visit then you must get a guide as there are so many things that are hidden it would be a shame to miss them. The most obvious historical aspect of Newcastle is the old Roman wall. As ...

Party City

Advantages: Great place to live and enjoy yourself
Disadvantages: Nowt

I've lived in Newcastle about 15 years and absolutely love it. In some poll or other it was voted eighth best party city in the world. It has a lot of history , culture, things to do , and the natives are extremely friendly. There is something for everyone here, or hereabouts, but it's still amazing that the cloth cap, whippets and pigeons image of Newcastle and the Nort East in general still persists in some quarters. There are many web sites that ...
...Though it's not strictly Newcastle (it's Gateshead) , if you approach from the south you will see "The Angel of the North", which love it or hate it (I love it) is a very impressive landmark. Then there's the Tyne Bridge (the coathanger bridge) which was the model for Sydney Harbour Bridge, and the new Millenium foot bridge which is due to open to the public in June 2001. If you drink at the Pitcher and Piano, you are right next to the Millenium ...

Newcastle Attractions

Advantages: Lively, cosmopolitan city surrounded by stunning countryside and coast.
Disadvantages: None really - something for everyone - but wrap up outdoors!

and this is saluted by a Red Arrow flyover. There are some terrific places to eat and drink including Unos, La Tasca (tapas bar) , The Slug and Lettuce Bistro, The Pitcher and Piano and Est, Est Est as well as many others. The Old Cooperage pub is worth a visit and there are also several nightclubs by the Quayside. The Quayside area is well served by hotels including Malmaison, The Copthorne and The Hilton. Grey Street has been voted one of the most attractive streets in England and a stroll up it from the river will lead to a huge variety of shops. Newcastle is a vibrant university town and of course there is the football! A short way out of the city will lead you to the stunning coastline, from Tynemouth up to the Scottish Borders which boasts magnificent castles and fabulous coastline. My local airport.

Advantages: Small airport all within one big terminal building so easy to use
Disadvantages: Not enough international flights

Ive used Newcastle airport to fly from all the time. I find it a compact little airport, with good facilities. I will try my best to describe this airport to people whom have not yet used it. First of all the airport is located 8 miles to the north west of Newcastle centre. The airport is served every 15 minutes by Newcastles Metro Rail/tram system and the journey time is under 30 minutes.Other public transport including the bus is poor. There are plenty of taxis outside of the termainal buildings and will cost about £15 and take depending on traffic 15 minutes. The hotel about 1/4 a mile away from the airport is called the Britannia and should cost between £50 and £100 a night depending on how busy they are for this 3 star property. If this is full they is something like a travel lodge close by(but i cannot remember the name ...

An Airport That Does Not Feel Like An Airport

Advantages: Very spacious and comfortable
Disadvantages: Sill fairly limited number of destinations

Newcastle has grown in recent years into a sizeable international airport. It now serves a reasonable number of holiday destinations by chartered flights including all the major Spanish resorts and others like Florida, Cyprus, Italy (Naples), Turkey and a new service to Dubrovnik in Croatia. I have used it recently for a flight to Brussels with Sabena. Now I am not saying I am the worlds most travelled person but I have been through a number of different airports in my time. Frankly there is little to choose between any of them. They all feel like, well, airports. They are usually hugely buildings which are like aeroplane hangers with carpoets and a few seats. The people in charge may put in the odd Costa Coffee bar or Burger King but the over all ambience is still distinctly airport. Newcastle airport makes a pleasant change. OK ...
