I am a student in Newcastle, and it is a brilliant city to live in. I'm from a small little town so Newcastle was a bit of a change for me, but I love it!
NIGHTLIFE: Nights out in Newcastle are excellent, i tend to just go out through the week, as even tho Fridays and Saturdays are both excellent nights out, wherever you go it is really expensive (so on these nights I would just stick to the student union). On a Saturday night you could pay about £10 to get in a club. Every other night out in Newcastle is also brilliant- and cheap too! On a Monday night I would go to bars in The Gate - a big complex with the Odeon ciinema, restaurants (such as Frankie and Bennys, Pizza Hut, The Spice Cube, Nandos, Ask,M.A Potters and a new one Bannatyne) and the fantastic bars (many of which are open late, and more like clubs than bars). There's Bar Beyond (which serves food in the day), Lloyds, Sam Jacks, Mood bar and Hide bar. After the bars I'd go to Tiger Tiger, which is right outside the gate. Its quite a cool place, where everyone dresses to impress. The theme on Monday night is 'Vodka Island' and they do a selection of cocktails, and drinks in general are reasonlable prices. Its a big club, with seperate bar areas, and a club area, all over three floors. On Tuesday I would go to the Quayside, head for Chase, a really smart bar which is free to get in, and does buy one get one free (or doubles for singles) on drinks on a Tuesday
night, and drinks are quite reasonable prices. There are a few other bars on the Quayside such as Casa, Lloyds Quayside bar, Akenside trader, plus loads more. All are good. Then I'd go to Sea, a club next to Sea on the Quayside. Its RnB night on a Tuesday, and always gets busy, so get here reasonably early (10.30-11). Its a good mix of music and people, including lots of students. Drinks are quite cheap too, and it is about £3 to get in (with an NUS card) a bit more without one. Its always a good night here, and i would recomend it. Wednesday night, I'd head to Blu Bambu, in the Bigg Market. the bars round here are a little bit rough, so I'd start the night off on Dean Street (near the Quayside), where there are loads of really smart bars, like Hoko 10, the Living Room, The Lodge (where you might bump into Ant and Dec as they own it!!), or go to collingwood street (right next to Dean street) to bars like Apartment, @home of the Attic. All of which are really nice bars, and will guarantee a good night, any night of the week. #Blu Bambu is in the Bigg Market in town, and has its student night in a Wednesday, it is cheap to get in (about £3 with NUS) and drinks are also cheap. It gets packed on a Wednesday (mainly with students) so get there at about half 10, and be prepared to get shoved around a little bit, but it is a really good fun night out, not for serious clubbers, but a good night. Thursday night would be a good night for Baja (also good on a Wednesday) Its actually on the Gateshead side of the river, just over the swing bridge (the little red and white one). Buffalo Joes is a bar right next to Baja, which is a really good bar, with a Wild West Theme complete with bucking bronco. Baja has a beach club theme, and it is truly a fun night out, playing old music, from the 60s to 90s; some real classics!! Be prepared to get up and dance!! Drinks are cheap, and they do some nice cocktails too. Ikon in town is also good on a Thursday night, the night "Lovedough" is RnB and gets quite busy, but is a good night out if ur into RnB.. If you must go out on Friday or Saturday night I would recommend the Gat (see above) after a film or a meal, or the Trendy Osborne Road, in Jesmond. This is a really lovely suburb, where there is always a good mix of students and proffessionals, the bars are all really smart, and there are a few reastaurants here too. Bars include the always busy Osbornes, Spy, Bilabong, and Barlise. This would also be a good place to stay if you are visiting Newcaslte, as there are a number of nice hotels on Osborne Road (there are also loads of hotels in the town and on the Quayside). The bars around Newcastle's central station are also good; upmarket and stylish bars include The Centurian, Destination, The Lounge, The Long Bar, and Revolution (a vodka bar where you can get all sorts of different flavoured vodka shots at reasonable prices). Foundation on Melbourne Street (get a taxi if you are unfamiliar as its quite hard to find), and World Head Quarters in town (near the fire station prob a good idea to get a taxi here too), are good clubs for the more serious clubber. Foundation in particular attracts the big name DJs at weekends but be prepared to pay up to £20 in on such nights. In my opinion the best night out is on a Sunday, in Stereo on the Quayside. I'd start the night with a few drinks in the Pitcher and Piano, a fantastic stylish bar right on the Quayside, right next to the Millenium bridge. drinks quite pricey (they also do food), but its well worth it for its stylish furnishings and great location. Another good bar to go to would be bar 55, on the roundabout as you come into newcastle from the south. Its a really cool bar, in an impressive building (this bar is good whatever night you go) Stereo is just behind the Pitcher and Piano, and on a Sunday night it is Funky House. It is a truly fantastic night out- open till 1am, its the only place i'd recommend on a Sunday night. It gets really busy (and really hot) so i'd go at about half 10 or you'll have to queue for ages. there's a good mix of people, with no dress code (dress to impress, but i wouldnt go in a smart shirt, everyone dresses quite funky in here).
Overall, Newcastle has a fantastic nighlife, and there is something for every night of the week. If you are up for the weekend, you cant really go wrong, everywhere will be busy, but be prepared to spend quite a lot on a night out!!
SHOPPING Newcastle town centre is great for shopping, with Eldon Square, including Fenwick and John Lewis. All the high street stores are on Northumberland Street and Eldon Square. There are also some really cool little shops on highbridge street, whic is just off Grey Street. Like Maverick, Union and Attica (a really cool little second hand shop selling all sorts from tyhe 50s and 60s-fantastic!) There is also The Metro Centre in Gateshead, which you can drive to, catch a bus (from town, number 100) to or get a train to (from central station). Its a massive shopping centre, with all the high street shops you would expect, as well as little independent shops and tons of restaurants and a few bars. Theres also an indoor themepark (Metroland) a Laserquest and a bowling alley. You can easily spend a day here, but it gets bery busy at the weekend, especially if the weather is bad.
THINGS TO DO There are loads of museums etcx in Newcastle, like the Life Science centre, the Discovery Museum (which is free) the Hancock Museum, and art Galleries like the Baltic(on Gateshead side of the Quayside, just over the millennium bridge, and the Laing (in town), both of which are free. A day just spent wandering alon g the quayside, over the millennium bridge is also recommended. Theres also the Odeon cinema in the Gate. There are also a number of historical places around the city, if you want to do the tourist thing, I'd recommend gettin gthe Newcastle sightseeing bus, form the Quayside, near the millennium bridge, as it takes you round all the main places, and you can get on and off as you wish.
PLACES TO EAT The are hundreds of restaurants in Newcastle, there's The Gate (see above) with a choice of restaurants, the Quayside, with some fantastic restaurants including Italians: Azzuri, Unos, Est Est Est. There's La Tasca, a Tapas restaurant, The Big Mussel, a Seafood restaurant plus loads more. In town, on Dean Street, there are also lots of good places to eat, like Pizza Express, Zizzis, and some Indians. The best thing to do would be to walk along the road, and see where you fancy. There is also China town, Stowell Street (behind the Gate) where you can get all you can eat chinese buffets, which are really good quality and value. I would recommend King Lau's Buffet.
Overall Newcaslte is a brilliant City, and I would recommend anyone to visit. If you are stuck fpr places to eat, drink, etc, the people are so friendly and helpful, and i'm sure staff in hotels would be more than happy to make suggestions.
