On our first visit to an American town we usually head straight to the visitor centre which are a mine of information. Unfortunately I was initially put off Newport because their visitor centre is in a run down area on the outskirts of the town. However I’m pleased that we continued on as the town is fascinating. Newport is at the southern tip of an island and is surrounded by water. There is a beautiful harbor area, which is also home to a shopping area and some rather pricey restaurants.

We decided to visit the Marble House, where all the furnishings were original. The whole place was very impressive and I have never seen anything like it in this country. It was mind boggling to think of how much money had been spent on the house.
As we had decent weather when we were there (this was in September) we decided to do the famous ‘cliff walk’. This follows along the back of Ocean Drive so you get to see the wonderful houses from the back. Although the scenery was wonderful the paths are not in good repair and wind around rather precariously at times (this is against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean) so I was somewhat pleased when we came to the end of the 3.5-mile trail!
There are lots to keep you busy in Newport for a few days. We didn’t come across any of the usual chain restaurants while here so it was nice to seek out some individual places. I can particularly recommend the Brick Alley Pub. This has a great atmosphere, an outdoor shaded courtyard and an indoor dining room with an excellent seafood menu.
I loved this area and hope to go back again sometime.
...a few miles out of Newport about 15min drive. Newport does not reflect the true America, indeed there are parts of Newport especialy views from the cliff walk that are very English looking, in fact the whole of Newport is Old Colonial the properties in the Belle View area are very large Mansions, many are open to the public. In Newport town itself there is not a McDonalds, BurgerKing, PizzaHut or any of the fast food outlets that we would associate ... ...to someone from England. Newport is not too far from Boston, there are plenty of buses that take you from Newport to Boston and back not too expensive. I feel that I will proberbly return not just because my sister is there, but because Newport is a nice relaxed place. ...

Newport Past and Present.

The History.

In the early 1800's the bells of St Woolos Cathedral would ring out to summon the community of this small village based at the bottom of the hill., this hill would later become known as Stow Hill which is now more famed for its Nightclubs and Bars. Although with the development with Steam engines, the demand for the coal from the valley communities would boom and bring along with it a boom to Newport. Newport was chosen due to its prime location at the mouth of the river seven and close access to the valley communities. It would lead to a great canal system from the valleys reaching down to Newport and the soon booming docklands. Due to this boom, the small village of about 1000 in the 1800's increased to a massive 67 ...
Croeso yr Casnewydd, or Welcome to Newport, my hometown.
While I was thinking of this review, I felt an introduction to the historic city of Newport was in order. History shapes a town, Newport has only recently been granted city status, and so I will call it a town. All around this part of South Wales is steeped in history, but I immediately came upon a stumbling block. I thought I knew my town well, but it?s only authentic history starts less than 1000 years ago.
Whether from indifference or lost documentation, little is known of the town?s origins.
Abergavenny, some twenty miles from Newport, once housed a huge library in its castle, but sieges left the castle and it?s contents burnt down, around the time of Oliver Cromwell.

Advantages: Clean, Small selection of Shops & "Hooters" Disadvantages: Maybe not a lot of things to do
Firstly you will have to forgive me, for my experineces in Newport Beach was in November of 2000, and maybe a lot has changed since....
I was on a 3 week vacation, visiting the west coast of America, and I was staying with a couple of good freinds of mine at Anihiem, Orange County, we had already visited Disney Land and seen many of the other attractions around Anahiem such as the Crystal Cathedral and so today we decided to head to the beach...
It was a really hot day and we set off early from our motel with a map, and started walking to where we were told we could catch a bus to Newport Beach....The walk was a lot further than what we had anticipated, and what we thought was only a few blocks away was infact a walk of what seemed like a mile or so in the baking heat...
after eventually reaching the main highway heading to ...
