The smallest American state of Rhode Island only has 3 main towns (Newport Providence and Middletown) but Newport is most definitely my favourite.
On our first visit to an American town we usually head straight to the visitor centre which are a mine of information. Unfortunately I was initially put off Newport because their visitor centre is in a run down area on the outskirts of the town. However I’m pleased that we continued on as the town is fascinating. Newport is at the southern tip of an island and is surrounded by water. There is a beautiful harbor area, which is also home to a shopping area and some rather pricey restaurants.
The preservation society of Newport maintains eight historic homes, which are open to the public. Most of them are situated along Ocean Drive (i.e. millionaire’s row!) and each appeared to be more opulent than the previous one. We decided to visit the Marble House, where all the furnishings were original. The whole place was very impressive and I have never seen anything like it in this country. It was mind boggling to think of how much money had been spent on the house.
As we had decent weather when we were there (this was in September) we decided to do the famous ‘cliff walk’. This follows along the back of Ocean Drive so you get to see the wonderful houses from the back. Although the scenery was wonderful the paths are not in good repair and wind around rather precariously at times (this is against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean) so I was somewhat pleased when we came to the end of the 3.5-mile trail!
There are lots to keep you busy in Newport for a few days. We didn’t come across any of the usual chain restaurants while here so it was nice to seek out some individual places. I can particularly recommend the Brick Alley Pub. This has a great atmosphere, an outdoor shaded courtyard and an indoor dining room with an excellent seafood menu.
I loved this area and hope to go back again sometime.
