Fantastic views of Hong Kong

Advantages Brilliant views, easy to reach
Disadvantages Slightly expensive, very commercialised
I used this cable car to reach the Big Buddha on Lantau Island during my trip to Hong Kong. The lower station is practically next to the Tung Chung MTR station and is therefore easily reached from Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.
You can buy singles and returns, adult and children's tickets, and choose between a standard cabin and a 'crystal cabin'. The latter has glass floors and is not for the faint-hearted!I got there at 10am when the cable car opened and I still had to queue for a short while, so I definitely recommend getting there early. The cable car ride itself lasted around half an hour and was a great experience with some fantastic views: Hong Kong Airport, the sea and the countryside as well as the Big Buddha itself when you get close.
By the other station there is a 'village' which I didn't like, as it is clearly artificial and full of souvenir shops and restaurants. I walked for around twenty minutes to the Big Buddha itself, climbing the steps to the top, then going back down to have lunch in the nearby monastery's vegetarian restaurant. This cost around £5 and was delicious. I then headed back to the cable car station for the return journey. At the bottom there was a chance to get a group photo taken, rollercoaster-style: needless to say I didn't bother with this.
I can't remember the prices for the cable car I'm afraid, but I remember thinking that they were expensive, but not ridiculously so.Overall I definitely recommend this cable car trip, it offers some amazing views and at least the Big Buddha at the end is free to visit, although in some ways the journey itself is better than what you find at the end! The downside is that the whole thing is very commercialised, although children may like this aspect. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Hong Kong!

Pity about the tatty 'village' at the top, but HK's a bit like that, isn't it?
