Niagara Falls is one of those sites that people claim is a must see. Although the actual falls are very impressive the surrounding area is very depressing! The town of Niagara Falls on the Canadian side has been ruined by cheap motels, tourist shops, and the list goes on. It is a horrible town unless you like bright lights and being ripped off. It is possible to visit it as a day trip from Toronto, there are a number of tour operators that run a service to the Falls. There is a boat service, aptly named the Maid of the Mist that you can go one. You adorn a big, black rubber mac and get taken as close under the falls as you would ever want to go. It is kind of fun but that is about it. They also have one of those cheesy cut outs of a barrel and you can have your photo taken - making it look like you are going over the falls! Very exciting! Nearby is another town called Niagara on the Lake which is lovely. It is a huge contrast to Niagara Falls. It is home to the Shaw Festival, which is a well known series of theatre that runs throughout the summer. For the more cultured visitor this would be a better option to the Falls.
