Heading down the Queen Elizabeth Highway from Toronto to Niagara Falls the first indication you get is the sound of the falls. If you have never physically been close to Niagara the sound hits you before the sight. Driving down you start to get a glimpse of the American Rainbow falls. WOW. This awesome sight is truly breathtaking till you round the corner and see the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Nothing can prepare you for this. Okay you have read about them, seen them on television or in files but the sheer size and volume takes your breath away. Wander around keeping away from the wet ground if you do not want sprayed. Join the throngs of tourists leaning over taking photo after photo. But take time to visit the parks and other attractions on offer. There is a gaudy Blackpool style street which has fairground attractions. There is the butterfly conservatory and the floral clock to name but two. Easiest way to see these is to buy a hop on hop off bus ticket. The bus drivers are helpful and friendly and run up and down constantly. Buy your ticket at one of the ticket booths and then hop on one of the frequent buses. We decided to go right to the end so we could see all there was then stop off at each on the way back. We also got plenty of opportunity to stop and photograph the amazing colours of the trees. Best photos from anadian side looking over the river to America. Don't forget there is also the chance to sail close to the falls in the maid of the mist. A terrifying experience. The boat gets as close as it can while passengers wrapped in blue plastic ponchos crowd to the front of the boat. The engines are going full power as the force of the falls strives to push the boat back down the river. Another unforgettable experience is the tour behind the falls. Who could forget Marilyn Monroe being pursued here in the film "Niagara". It is thrilling (again don the waterproof poncho first) to actually view the water from the inside. Getting tired and hungry? Plenty places for eating but two of the cheapest and best have to be the two casinos. The old and new casinos offer a buffet spread for only a few dollars (Like about $15 Can. a head) You pay only for alcoholic drinks and are tempted by an array of snow crab, sushi, roast beef, all kinds of salad and vegetables. Then just when you think you cannot eat any more - there is the dessert buffet. PHEW. After that take some cash (only what you can afford to lose) and get into the casino. In the old casino you get a cup of quarters and it is like being in Vegas. In the new casino you get a type of bank slip which is a bit more boring, but they kindly changed mine into quarters for me when I explained it was not very exciting having a bit of paper. The first day we tried the new casino and as I kept the winning slips I came away with $120, not bad. I started with $20 and played for 2 hours. The next time we went to the old casino and again had a very reasonably priced excellent buffet. I eventually (again $20 over 2 hours) lost it all so I went looking for my husband who came staggering up with several cups. He had won one big hit at the one armed bandits and it was too much for one cup. $180 in quarters for his original $20 was great and much more exciting to have the quarters counted up than handing over a few slips, so we will be going back to the old casino, There are lots of other options and attractions but why not go and look for yourself? Rooms and food are cheap.
