Some Good Deals Around but Quickly Becomes Repetitive

Advantages: Some Good Bargains, Good Food
Disadvantages: To Commercial, Lacking in Thai Culture

We visited the Night Bazaar on a holiday to Thailand this summer (2009). The lonely planet guide did not give it a particularly good rating but we were only there once. Having walked through the area we were slightly disappointed with the stalls selling exactly the same thing at initially extortionate prices. Bartering is a must and the stall sellers will almost be offended if you don't try. We had been to the Sunday market the day before and enjoyed ...
...tarnished are view of the night bazaar which seemed a lot more commercial, the last thing you want to see when you’re looking around a Thai market is a McDonalds or KFC in the background.

As we found throughout most of Thailand (except Bangkok), the Thai people are extremely polite and we never felt intimidated or threatened whilst walking through the market. It is a good idea however to make sure you know where your valuables are ... more

Chiang Mai night bazaar

Advantages: authentic handicrafts, talented craftsmen; intrigue around every corner
Disadvantages: Possible rip offs and no price tags - its all bartering!

The Chiang Mai night bazaar is a wholly original and magical place to shop. As the lights dim in the Northern Thai city, traders fill the streets and underpass with a huge array of crafts, knock off clothing/watches and various types of art. As you walk through the narrowed aisles Thai sellers compete for your attention, from fake designer watches to meticulously carved wood sculptures - this market has it all. Particular mention must go to the hard ...
...with requests and must work night and day to fufil the high demand that is asked of them. My advice would to buy as much of this artwork as you can afford, prices in western countries would be ten times as much and you will always regret not buying that special piece when your back on home soil. Competing with the painters talent is the wood sculpters, who paintakingly carve their crafts while squatting on their shop floors. The bulk of the work ...

Alive at Night

Advantages: Very cool, nature-loving city; Night Bazaar
Disadvantages: limpet-like tribeswomen

Chiang Mai is known as the Capitol of the North and is the biggest city in the north. Unlike Bangkok, Chiang Mai has trees and clean air, and the main areas are relatively uncrowded. There are many Wats (Buddhist temples) in the city, but the best one, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, is on a nearby mountain (Doi Suthep) a short songathaw ride away. You should see it just for the 300 step Naga staircase leading up to it. The view of Chiang Mai from the Wat is unmatched anywhere else in the city. The real action in Chiang Mai, however, is the Night Bazaar. It's shoulder to shoulder here, but you can get some of the best deals in the country here, especially on Northern crafts. The stall owners seem to start out asking at least double what the item is worth, so make sure your first offer is about half what they asked. Some items are ...

Wonderful City

Advantages: Cultural, busy, great shopping
Disadvantages: Pollution

As part of our honeymoon in 2000, my new husband and I journeyed to Thailand. We wanted to avoid Bangkok, but still wanted to experience a Thai city and so headed for the famed ancient capital, Chiang Mai. The first thing that greeted us when we got off the plane was the heat, although the clouds and smog give the city a hazy appearance, do not be fooled, the sun beats down hard! Dripping in sweat we headed for our hotel, the Empress in the centre of the city. Just 5 minutes walk from the fabulous Chiang Mai night bazaar, this hotel is in a prime position for exploring the city. The hotel itself is positivly luxurious, with its huge and ornate marble lobby and splendid rooms. Our room overlooked the city, busy and bustling at all times. All the staff at the hotel were exceptionally friendly and helpful and service was always ...

A Favourite Thing - Chiang Mai

Advantages: see op
Disadvantages: see op

?d recommend having a go at praying to anyone, I never believed in inner calm as much as I did after that, it takes away everything you?re worried about and lets you focus on being yourself for a while. It really helped me deal with the problems back in Leeds and helped me to stop worrying that bad things would happen to the people I love, most of all, it brought me closer to myself. Life Life in Chiang Mai is very different to life in Bangkok and Pattaya, everything is slower and much more laid back. There are still a vast number of the original Hill Tribes that inhabit Chiang Mai and the tourists are their source of income. In the evening, they frequent the night bazaars selling handmade belts and such like. It?s a really nice sight to see as it?s rare that people stay in such not advanced circumstances anymore but these people do ...
