We visited the Night Bazaar on a holiday to Thailand this summer (2009). The lonely planet guide did not give it a particularly good rating but we were only there once. Having walked through the area we were slightly disappointed with the stalls selling exactly the same thing at initially extortionate prices. Bartering is a must and the stall sellers will almost be offended if you don't try. We had been to the Sunday market the day before and enjoyed this due to the more open environment and the better food stalls available (products were the same but the atmosphere seemed better). This maybe tarnished are view of the night bazaar which seemed a lot more commercial, the last thing you want to see when you’re looking around a Thai market is a McDonalds or KFC in the background.
As we found throughout most of Thailand (except Bangkok), the Thai people are extremely polite and we never felt intimidated or threatened whilst walking through the market. It is a good idea however to make sure you know where your valuables are as the narrow side streets can get very busy at times.
Overall it was good to see the night bazaar but having been to the Sunday market the day before it seemed like a let down in comparison.
