Robert De Niro's Nobu sushi restaurant is still one of the hottest spots in New York and subsequently getting a table there is nigh on impossible. But don't worry if you can't snag a table because you can enjoy the same food and atmosphere of the original at Next Door Nobu. Here you are seated on a first come first served basis which means you might have to queue, but its worth the wait.
The restaurant is beautifully designed with nice Japanese features combined with modern styling. The look is sleek and cool but very welcoming. The staff, although pretty busy when we went, were very nice and helpful. Being a sushi virgin I asked our waiter for his recommendation. He pointed out dishes from the menu that other diners had, some of whom offered there own recommendations! We had a mixed starter to share which came with an array of sauces which they left for the main course. I opted for Nobu's famous black cod marinated in miso which was absolutely delicious. Its difficult to describe but it tastes a lot better than it sounds! My girlfriend went for a vegetarian noodle dish from quite a large selection of non fish dishes. The food looked and tasted fantastic and the service was excellent.
The atmosphere is great, more Sex and the City than Friends so you might want to dress up. Although in New York it seems that dressing down is as chic as dressing up. Despite the fact that there was no pressure from the staff we were aware of the queue outside and probably didn't stay as long as we normally would after we had finished.
The "restrooms" were like mini spas providing a calm oasis away from the hustle and noise in the restaurant and I could quite easily have spent longer there (girlfriend permitting).
All in all an excellent restaurant that I can highly recommend. We spent about 60GBP (90USD) for two including drinks (very nice Japanese beer), tips and tax.
Next Door Nobu is at 105 Hudson Street (cross street Franklin) next door to Nobu!
