Nomads Hostel Wellington was one of the most disappointing hostels I have stayed in, and the most over priced.

Nomads is part of a chain of hostels and I was led to believe that they where supposed to be some of the best, I have learnt now through experience to avoid the chain hostels at all costs.

They are highly over priced, lack the personal feel and with such a large turn over of staff not particularly well kept.

We stayed in 6 bed dorm room, the room its self was clean and tidy but very un friendly, with no character at all. White walls with 3 sets of bunks beds it made you feel like you where perhaps in a cell of some sort.
The room had automatic air conditioning that could not be adjusted which was great in the day when you had been out in the heat and wanted to come in to cool down, but not so great when you are freezing in the night with only a think sheet to cover yourself with.
The rooms also had small lockers, big enough to hold a passport and any documents o value, you have to use your own locks on these.

The kitchen, well considering this hostel was so big the kitchen was completely inadequate, it was ridiculously small with hardly any fridge space at all. It was the filthiest kitchen I have seen in all the hostels I have stayed at. I actually couldn't bring myself to eat from the kitchen for the three days we stayed for, not even a bit of toast at breakfast.

This hostel had no real lounge or communal area to speak of and was really unfriendly, in order to use the internet you had to purchase a Global Gossip card with a $10 minimum, this is fine if you are planning on staying for a while but if you just quickly want to check something it is not so great.

The reason we decided to book this hostel was because it advertises a 'free evening meal', when back packing you are always looking for ways to save money and paying a bit extra for a bed but with that price including a meal was a real appeal.

However we were sorely disappointed, the first night we collected our 'Free Meal' vouchers from the front desk and went to the bar next door to collect our food, we where seriously annoyed to find that our 'Free Meal' was one small slice of pizza and a handful of browning lettuce on the side f the plate. It really was a pathetic site to see.
We where told that we could upgrade our 'Free Meal' to a larger portion by paying an extra $5, for this you got another slice of pizza, you can get a whole takeaway pizza for just $10 from somewhere like Dominoes.
The second night the 'Free Meal' or snack was a battered sausage on a stick and about 5 potato wedges, I have to say the battered sausage really was one of the most disgusting things I have ever tried.

I have to say this really was false advertising and very misleading, please do not be conned by this offer, I believe all Nomads Hostels boost to offer the say 'Free Meals'

The connected to the hostel seemed to be quite good though, offering a Varity of entertainment and special offer nights. I was unfortunately unwell while I was in Wellington so I didn't really do much socialising but my friends had a good night watching a live band in the bar.

The hostel in a good location and is in walking distance from most of the main attractions in Wellington, word of advice, if you are going to the Ferry Port get a taxi, we walked it with all our bags etc and it nearly killed us. It took us about 20 mins and we nearly missed the ferry.

Prices:

10 bed dorm $23, 8 bed dorm $25, 6 bed dorm $27, 4 bed dorm $30 - the average we paid for a dorm room was $20 so as you can see they are overpriced for what you are getting.
