We took our son on the Norfolk Broads for a holiday when he was 15yrs old. We three enjoyed it, being the first holiday that we could afford for many a long year. It was a bit on the chilly side, a bit on the smelly side, a bit on the small side etc etc. But it was our first holiday for years and it was exciting in a way that none of the ones we have been on since have been.

My in-laws also took their children on boats on the Norfolk Broads when younger and one day, reminiscing, as they tend to, my mother in law and my husband were saying what lovely holidays they were. Now, I am of different stock, all I remembered was the smelly loo and the fact that my brain rocked for days afterwards, but memories always differ.

Now my in-laws aren’t as young as they were like the rest of us and my husband wanted to give them a trip down memory lane and a holiday on the broads seemed to be something they would enjoy and remember. Something that we had done together.

My son, on hearing what we planned also started reminiscing and decided to book a boat so that we could go along the broads together. They talked of bar-b-ques, lazy days fishing, exploring the waterways, getting the maps out to pore over and plan our route.

Now, our son had that year left the nest and moved in with a lovely woman, full of life, bounce, laughter and fun. She had a ten-year-old son and he was getting excited about this holiday and we were all looking forward to being in a large family group.

The first thing I suppose that went a bit wrong was that she fell pregnant, now this in itself wasn’t a bad thing and I got out my knitting needles and crochet hooks and want mad, terribly excited because a baby was to be born into the family. But being pregnant and on a cramped boat with a tiny smelly loo didn’t really go together. She suffered terrible backache and found it difficult to get comfy.

We started at the crack of dawn to get there as early as we could, my husband and son seemingly racing each other up the motorway.
I haven’t mentioned the dogs. We have one, a collie cross, who is lovely and well behaved but does bark in the car. I had thought that I would drive my van with the dogs in the back and hopefully they would soon settle. My son and partner had two, a lurcher and a jack russel who also got very excited and barked in the car. My husband and I went in his car with the ten year old in the back. My son drove my van with their luggage and three dogs in the back!!!
The noise level was ear piercingly loud and didn’t stop until we got there. We stopped on the way for refreshments and to let the dogs out for a breath of fresh air.

Enough about the journey, the boats. Well, we have been before so knew what we were getting.
But someone called Battiest has reminded me that some who read this won't have so I am adding some info.

Boats come in all shapes and sizes, we had one that is longish with windows along each side and just enough space to walk around the outside without falling in if you are careful. Inside were two bedrooms, very very small ones, with cupboards to store clothes and shoes. A narrow galley, just enough room for one person to cook, wash up etc, but if two of you want to be helpful be prepared to bump into each other and you will only be able to pass each other if you are very slim. The front has a lounging area, with a steering wheel and seat on the left hand side, seats and table on the other. Enough room for loads of people actually so long as they all sit down and the seating pulls out to make extra beds. All bed linen and kitchen equipment is supplyed.
There is a well at the front with built in plastic bench style seating around for nice days, and another at the back. The roof of these boats slides open backwards but we found with if open it was terribly draughty wherever you sat.
My husband and I had the end cabin and slept in a tiny double bed. We could hear every sound and the in-laws obviously weren’t getting much sleep either. My husband went to sleep immediately and I lay there, wedged against the wall trapped beneath the windowsill thing. In the middle of the night I needed to get up and use the loo which my husband had been using all evening and not pulling the chain so as not to disturb the others. I reached over him, stretched, climbed, stretched my leg down the other side, couldn’t reach the floor. A bit of struggling later and he appeared to still be asleep, I crept in to the loo, didn’t dare turn the light on for fear of waking the whole lot of them, sat, AAAAHHHHH wet bum!!!!!! He must have drunk gallons of beer that night because in trying to be quiet and not pulling the chain and going in the dark he had filled the thing up!!!!!

Oh well, I did get some sleep but it did feel like a coffin.
Navigating these boats is like driving a car very very slowly, most of the time lsee than 4 miles an hour, and if you break the speed limit the broads police chase you and tell you to slow down over a loudspeaker. There are rules about yaghts, something about keeping to their right, but that was something I never did get the hang of, maybe it was their left. Mooring is a bit of a nightmare. The person at the wheel reverses in, everyone else runs about outside, jumps off when they can and shouts instructions. I do think there is a lot of bumping, because it is all so slow you oversteer, turn the wheel the wrong way and get in a muddle with everyone shouting at you and not being able to see very well where you should be going. Boats moor back on and pointing outwards in the places that are busy. Tie up securely so if you go off for an hour or two it is still there and beware at Great Yarmouth because it is so tidal, we did see boats hanging on their mooring ropes high and dry.
When planning a days boating, it is a good idea to check the tides and the times you expect to be going under some of the bridges because otherwise, either you will take your top off or you will be sitting waiting for ages for the tide to go out enough to get under. Be aware also that some types of boats won't go under however low the tide.
Along the broads are lots of villages and towns to moor up at, very few places charge, Gt. Yarmouth being one that does. Usually you find on shore a convenience shop, somewhere to eat, somewhere to walk. Some of the places have amusement arcades, toilets, take aways etc. The best shopping is at Potter Hieghm (I hope I have remembered to spell that right) and one of the best fish 'n chip shops in the country is there also so worth a stop, although the bridge is very low.

We meandered along the waterways, chatting, cooking, eating and all the other things one does on holiday, it was a bit small for four of us and it wasn’t easy finding places to moor up so that three dogs could have a bit of exercise.
The broads have some of the most beautiful scenery around, it is a very peaceful type of holiday.

Suddenly there were shouts from the other boat, dog in the water!!!!! Me being me laughed, she did look funny swimming along round the front of the boat. Ever resourceful my son hooked her with the mooring hook and off we went again. There had been quite a bit of swearing which we hoped the in-laws hadn’t heard but I do have my suspicions.

We bar-be-queued on the side of the broads, we fished, and we sat around and felt we were enjoying our holiday.

Then a couple of days later the lurcher fell in, well he was scared and swam for shore, getting tangled up in some trees that were growing out of the water. It took ages to get him out and my son eventually had to go in, up to his middle in muddy water and drag him out. After that they shut the dogs inside while travelling but it wasn’t the last time they fell in. It seemed as soon as we moored they jumped off the side and swam to shore.
Thinking how sensible my dog was we let her run round and round the boat while we were going along. One time I was sitting at the back of the boat videoing the scenery and suddenly a dog swam by, going hell for leather to the other boat. My son got the hook out again but she is much the heaviest dog in the party and took him ages to pull out. She stayed with them on their boat until evening when we moored again.

My in-laws decided after a couple of days that boating wasn’t their thing, they took to the road and went home which made me feel a bit cheated because if they weren’t coming we would have been soaking up the sun.

We did get to know my sons new family very well and I did get to do loads of knitting. The weather was typical English September weather so no tans acquired.
When we got home and were settled in the evening my husband started looking at teletext for holidays. ‘We have just had a holiday’ said I, thinking how good it was to be in my own home again with the ground still at last, although my brain swayed for a couple of days. ‘That wasn’t a holiday’ He replied. ‘That was torture’ Oh dear, and it was all his idea!!!!! Needless to say we spent part of December in the Canaries soaking up the sun and relaxing away from work and family and daily life.

Would I recommend holidays on the broads? Yes, actually, we have had great times there, and one day might go just the two of us. Our trouble is we try to please everyone and it never seems to work.

Above is a website link for anyone who is interested in finding out more about these sort of holidays.

I never did know how much that holiday cost, whenever I said it seemed a lot of money for a boat my husband started muttering about how he was paying and I didn't need to know. More details are on the above website.

Brings back some memories. We used to live just outside Oulton (of Oulton Broad fame). ~ Mark
