As Christmas drew near, Jon and I had some shopping to do. We chose Norfolk, Virginia, as our shopping destination largely because of its new mall, The MacArthur Center. After our first journey over The Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel, we decided that it would be nice to go there for a short weekend holiday.
I'll digress and tell you a little bit about The Eastern Shore of Virginia (where I live) and it's relationship to the City of Norfolk. Norfolk is home to one of the largest naval bases in the United States. Much of the population there is transitory - only there for a few years before moving on to another base. However, the heart of Norfolk belongs to its long-time residents, who are quite proud of their home. Before I was born, one had to take a ferry across the Chesapeake Bay to get to Norfolk, where they would spend a day downtown both shopping and taking in a play, concert, or movie. When the ferry was running, the ride over was often unpredictable due to weather. The ferry ride could be smooth as glass, or very choppy and uncomfortable. I've heard tales of having meals on the ferry and having the table lean with a wave, with food sliding everywhere.
In 1963 (the year I was born!), one of the greatest wonders of modern times was completed: The Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel. This nearly 20-mile long span that includes two tunnels is quite an experience to drive over. It is breathtakingly beautiful on a clear day, but it can also be a bit uncomfortable when high winds or icy roadways interfere. The addition of this bridge has cut the trip to Norfolk to only an hour and a quarter. So, it's only a hop, skip, and a jump to get there!
To get back to Norfolk itself (geez, you're probably asleep by now!), it is a wonderful city to visit. Until about 10 years ago, the city had become somewhat rundown and was ridden by crime. It has now become a lovely city with both the new MacArthur Mall and small independently-owned boutiques and coffee shops at every corner. Also, Norfolk has wonderful restaurants. Many specialize in this region's specialty: seafood and southern-style fare. However, with Norfolk's ethnic diversity, one can find a restaurant of almost any nationality to suit his or her fancy.
As far as accommodations go, Jon and I chose The Tazewell Hotel and Suites in which to stay. The Tazewell was recently acquired by the Ramada Inns chain (a division of the Marriott group) and has received a facelift and complete refurbishing inside. It was a lovely place to stay. Compared to the other major hotels in Norfolk, it offered excellent prices. Our room was lovely with one exception: there was no bathroom door (it only had a curtain to give one privacy). This caused a problem when Jon had his "morning constitutional." I had to spray some of my cologne in the room to make it bearable. The staff at this hotel could not have been more courteous or helpful, which made up for the lack of a proper bathroom door!
Norfolk is also home to some fine museums. Nauticus, which was built about 8 years ago is a fascinating place to visit. Inside the museum, various forms of sealife are on display in large aquariums. Short films are shown about various subjects, including one about how battleships are built and another about various sea creatures. Also, the Battleship, USS Wisconsin, is docked at Nauticus. One can hop aboard and tour the ship.
The Virginia Symphony originated in Norfolk and gives frequent performances at the Harrison Opera House. There are dinner theatre groups and playhouses abound. Scope is a dome-shaped building that is an entertainment center where Old Dominion University basketball games are played, concerts are held, and ice shows are performed.
Although the city can be confusing to navigate, luckily there are trolley cars (though not as pretty as the ones in San Francisco, California) and other forms of public transportation.
If ever you have the chance to visit Virginia, be sure to visit Norfolk. It is a lovely coastal city with loads to offer. You can spend a little money or a lot; it all depends on what you choose to do while you are there. Just remember, once you get some Virginia sand in your shoes, you just might not want to leave.
Advantages: Largely unspolit and undiscovered by tourists. Peaceful and tranquil, beautiful and serene. Disadvantages: Not for those who enjoy the hustle and bustle of city life.
;s East Coast, to the south of Washington DC and above North Carolina. I am actually living North of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, in a beautiful little town called Nassawadox. The Eastern Shore comprises two counties, Accomac and Northampton, with a combined population of around 50,000. This area remains largely undiscovered by tourists but has more to offer than most people could ever imagine.
The whole of the Eastern Shore offers both tranquility and beauty. It is a mainly rural area and remains largely unchanged from the early days of the area’s first occupation 225 years ago. Life goes by at a steady and unrushed pace - that certainly suits me – traffic is minimal and the people here are amongst then most warm, welcoming and friendly I have ever met.
Charming, is one word that adequately describes the towns ...
Advantages: Fly to many locations Disadvantages: Not the most comfortable coach seats
As I now fly from the US to the UK alot, okay not alot compared to the normal business man but 2 or 3 times a year I have finally decided to stick to one airline and get those flying miles working in my benefit. It just happened at the time I decided to do all this I wound up with a ticket on an USAirways flight. So being a man of my word I have not deviated from them since.
Okay now let me get into some personal opinions about this company. My first flying experience with this company was from Norfolk, Virginia to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to London Gatwick. I had purchased the ticket from a travel agent so I did not get to interact with the Airline employees until checking in for my flight. Upon arriving to my terminal I checked in at the gate and we promplty boarded the flight on time. Now this was a shocker to me. Once ...

amount of peace and tranquillity ? if only sitting on the pier watching the waves, and fish being caught. If you need a change from the beach the Norfolk Naval Base is very close.
We were at Virginia Beach on September 11th, and as you can imagine the whole mood of the holiday changed, however this is an op about Virginia itself, and although the events of September 11th, obviously did have a big impact on the last part of our holiday there, the feelings should be another op and not this one. Therefore I will only mention it where I feel necessary.
