The North Laine is very easy to reach, when exiting Brighton Station, go onto the road that goes under the station forecourt (Trafalgar St), just go down the street a little and you will be in the North Laine. This is quite a large shopping area, comprising Trafalgar St, Sydney St, Kensington Gardens, Bond and one other street the name of which I have forgotten.
the choice of shops is very large indeed; you want cool skateboard type wear or more hippyish attire, you can find it here. You want good value cafes with interesting menus, weird esoteric shops which sell items like Bonsai Trees and comic, you want a variety of independent record shops with helpful staff, you want a shop selling guarana enhanced drinks, you want shops with an ecological and social conscience - you can find it all here at very reasonable prices.
This area should only take 20 minutes to walk through but usually people end up sidelined checking out some new shop that only just opened. Highlights of the North Laine include the aforementioned guarana shop with their delicious fruit punch, Borderline records, a great second hand record shop on Bond St, Sandpiper books which sells esoteric academic and art books at bargain prices (a book of Le Corbusier's architectural wonders for £5 anyone?)and the one forty five a shop which sells phat clothing but at prices too high for me unfortunately. In terms of cafes the choice is limitless - the Dorset, Wai-Kika-MOocow, Dumbwaiter, Bamboo Bar (formerly Grinders), the Kensington, Zerbs etc
The North Laine also has the Komedia theatre complex, newly moved from Manchester St (Kemptown) and the Snoopers Paradise which is like a gigantic flea market, a place you could be lost in for decades if you are not careful. In front of this place, there is a mini market held on Saturdays with people trying to flog 3 pairs of socks for £2. There are also lots of people giving out flyers, pamphletts, Schnews (best free newspaper) and in the past, Living Marxism.
The downside is that the place can get a bit crowded in summer (esp. Kensington Gardens), but that is a minor gripe. This place is part of the heart of Brighton
Advantages: good atmosphere, good shops Disadvantages: sometimes crowded
...visiting Brighton this summer, the north lanes are a must for shopping, eating and drinking. Its easy to reach the north lanes, they're just down the road from Brighton train station, about a 5 minute walk. At first, they dont look like much, but as you wander further in, you see more and more shops, restaurants and cafes. I prefer the North lanes to the south lanes, as the shops are more original and unique and there are many opportunities for eating.
... ...- a second hand clothes store, the kensington - good pub, and the bead shop, where you can buy any beads imaginable and create your own jewellery. New shops are always coming into the lanes, as are many side stalls.
The area is pedestrianised, which makes it easy to walk down, and its situated quite near the other lanes, and churchill square, the main shopping area of Brighton.
The only downside to the Lanes is that it gets very crowded in the ...

Advantages: The guitar and amp centre Disadvantages: Quite small
This is The Brighton Camden where one can buy different clothes like retro and all sorts for the goth looks. ITs a great place for people from London but I wouldn't recommend it to those aged over 50, this place with the brightly colours and bong shops, could very well give them a heart attack. Its situated just underneath Brighton Station and is also very near to the Pavilion which was built in the 19th Century. The guitar and Amp centre is one ...

Advantages: Great beer, good food Disadvantages: Gets busy
If you are a fan of real ale but don't want to drink in a pub populated by overweight middle-aged men with long beards and even longer sideburns then this is the place for you.
'The Basketmakers Arms' (12 Gloucester Road) is a long established traditional and yet trendy, public house hidden away in the North Laines of Brighton. The North Laines (not to be confused with the more touristy Lanes!) is an area of small streets leading down the hill on the left hand side of the main Brighton Railway station. The area is full of small shops selling all sorts of weird and wonderful items from second hand comics and books, trendy designer clothes to craft shops and bohemian looking café and bars. There is a good selection of pubs in the area and 'The Basketmakers Arms' is probably one of the best.

Advantages: friendly service, great location Disadvantages: wee bit overpriced for level of facilities
be debited unless we did not turn up. We booked a a side facing double room which cost £180 altogether (£110 for the Saturday night and £70 for the Sunday). Their prices start at £60 for a single room or a room facing the back and go up to £140 for the sea facing rooms with four poster beds. I felt the prices were perhaps little bit expensive for the facilities offered but I think that is the normal price for a semi decent hotel in Brighton.
On of the best things about the hotel is that it is very easy to find being on the seafront. We arrived by coach (the coach park is very central location just behind the pier) and it was only a ten minute walk from there (it's a 15 to 20 minute walk to the NorthLanes and other attraction in Brighton ). It was also very easy to find as it is a red brick Victorian building with a gabled roof ...
Advantages: Bus service is brilliant (24hr), Good place, Good people... Disadvantages: Expensive for drinks and food etc. (even student offers)
) and I lived in Brighton. Yeah it was a mission to get to Uni, but once I was in town I was more determined to stay in town so we'd either chill on the beach, sit in pubs or walk around the lanes and North laines. I had a wicked first year, whatever halls you end up at you will love. Most people in Brighton are open minded and individual and this is what makes it such a special place. I've definately changed for the better. Next term I move into a amazing house with amazing people- life couldn't be better. ...
