First of all, the two entries here before me doesn't do North West Airlines justice. At least no Mpnichols.
Well, perosnally I travel with North West quite a lot from London to Toronto/New York (family ties) because it is 1) CHEAP 2) STUDENT DISCOUNTS 3) GOOD SERVICE (they try as hard as humanly possible to make your journey bearable) 4) NICE EDIBLE FOOD (unlike BA and Virgin! - both of which I have tried and did not impress me a bit).
Of course I based the above on the price you pay for it. Think about it this way, you normally pay about 2/3 or sometimes 1/2 of what other major airlines charge - there is an even greater disparity during the busy holiday season. I normally pay around 250 pounds return flights during the peak times (eg, my uni holidays). Compared to about 400 pounds onwards for other airlines.
So in conclusion I would recommend this airline to people who don't mind smaller seats.
