I travelled Northwest from London Gatwick to San Francisco International via Detroit Wayne County and I could npt regret the decision more. The main motivation was financial, at a mere 199 pounds + tax it was at least 50% cheaper than the next best deal from Virgin. In hindsight I would willingly have paid twice what I actually did. The flight time including the connection was some 16 hours, sufficiently unbelievable in itself, but the troubles began at check-in. As we checked in we were met by the least friendly staff in history, curt and unhelpful. We were told that the plane was too hevy and would have to unload people and luggage. We boarded the plane, eager to reach our destination, only to be told that (after an hour sat on the runway) the plane was too heavy and the people + luggage which had been asked to fly a day later wopuld now leave the plane. Some 25 people were removed and their, a process which took 5-6 hours. During the unloading we were sat on the runway, no air-conditioning, no food, no water and unfriendly staff once more. The plane actually made it to Detroit where we missed our connecting flight, and half our luggage was missing. In Detroit no-one could tell us where to go or who to see about arranging another flight, we were told the luggage should go straight to our final destination. In San Francisco, by this time late and no available taxi's there is further unfriendly staff and stil no luggage. At lost luggage the NW staff could not tell me where my luggage was, when it would arrive, or how much I would be compensated. After a series of phone calls over a period of 5 days i received my luggage, with no explanation, no apology and no details of compensation. The return journey ran on time, but was again full of unfriendly staff. I thank my lucky stars that i am still alive, and i remain, one month later, furious at the time i lost while on vacation and at the continuing lack of an apology. Save your dignity and ignore NW's low prices, there is a reason for them.

Actually I fonud that North West was alright! I mean think about it, for the price you pay for the flight, one shouldn't really expect too much and compare with the BIG airlines.
I got nice food, and nice service. The people were really nice to me (both the NW air stewards/ess and grounds people).
