NIR is a joke! I got the Portadown to Dublintrain to go see the Top Gear Live in the RDS. The reason i took the train is because we were told by Top Gear Live not to bring a car as there would be no parking facilities. The ticket cost £22 each, so for the five of us going thats £110! Not exactly cheap by any means.
When we got on the train there wasnt a seat available for the whole length of the journey so we had to stand in the aisles. The train itself was old, dirty and very bumpy. Finally we got off at dublin 40 mins late so had to rush to see the show.
On the way home things got even worse. The train left on time to my surprise but conditions on board weren't much better. We finally got a seat but not for long. The train started crawling very slowly and then stopped all together. We waited for about 25 mins before we were informed that the train had broken down and that it was going to limp to Dundalk were we would be taken by bus to Portadown. After nearly two hours on the bus we finally got to Portadown.
If you are thinking about using Northern Ireland Rail - DONT! If the government want us to use public transport they will have to completely overall this network. As for me il be taking the car in future and using one of Dublin City Centre car parks and this would still be a hell of a lot cheaper than £110 it took for five of us to use the train!

Sounds terrible....its a shame though, you know its not the driver/staff fault yet you just want to go shout at them xx

Have you tried to get some money back, i would write to them and kick off big style. I cant complain about my regular service (hull - halifax. 1 change in leeds).

Review of Northern Ireland Railways
Advantages: Fares are reasonable with frequent promotions, staff are generally helpful, all trains have disabled access (despite their age). Disadvantages: Frequent delays, old and dirty trains, some stations lack basic facilities.
