No Robin Hood but still worth a visit 8 of 8 Ciao Users found the following review helpful

Advantages Green space in a busy city.

Disadvantages It is not a proper castle

If you ever find yourself in Nottingham with nothing else to do you could do a lot worse than to visit the Castle Museum. I do not know why it is called a castle, as it is more of an old house. You cannot imagine Robin Hood battling with the sheriff of Nottingham here. (You will find Robin Hood outside.)

When you enter the grounds there is plenty of grass for picnics and wandering around away from the bustle of a busy city. There are lots of trees with wooded paths to walk along. Benches and rubbish bins are placed around the place. There are flowers to admire if you like looking at beds of flowers. There is even equipment for children to play on.

The displays in the museum change on a regular basis but they are well presented and I have never found it too busy to spend time enjoying what is on display. There are some excellent displays for children with hand on experiences. You can find out more about the history of Nottingham.

If you are an adventurous type of person there are regular trips arranged down into the caves in the castle rock. They charge a small fee to take small parties down. Nottingham has been known for its caves, which have been used for many things in the past. Because the rock, which the city is built on, is soft, it has been the obvious option to build into the rocks.

I have never eaten in the cafe but it looks clean and is usually well liked by other people. There is a shop at the entrance to the grounds selling the usual momorabilia.

I have regularly taken my children to the castle grounds, it is a good place to meet up with other people and have a picnic. The views of Nottingham and some of the surrounding area are excellent from inside the grounds.

Best of all if you are there Monday to Friday then there is no entrance fee. At the week end it is £2.00 for adults and 50p for children I believe.

Great op :) I'd just like to point out so no one makes the mistake I did, the grounds close at dusk. I'd been once in the summer quite late and then found it was closed much earlier later in the year.

If it is free I must visit it one day when I am in Nottingham. Thank you for telling me about it.

Castle was built in 1850 something after the original was burnt/raised to the ground in a big riot. About bread I beleave.
