Nottingham has a bad reputation, its nickname being 'Shottingham' after all. Its just like any city in terms of crime really though, and I definately feel safer here than in London (which is my home, I'm just at Uni here). I don't think it deserves its bad reputation.
Nottingham is a decent shopping centre, having most big chain stores and a number of boutiques and more retro shops. There are two big shopping centres - the Victoria Centre, and Broadmarsh (which also is home to to main bus station). Broadmarsh is one of the ugliest shopping centres in existance, and the Victoria Centre contains the better shops really anyway (including Topman, Debenhams etc).
Nottinghams central square is Market Square. Throughout the year its used for different things including to house a German christmas market, a giant wheel, a stage with live music (Athlete played this year), and various other spectacles.
Nottingham has a vibrant nightlife, countless bars and a great deal of clubs. The more up-market and trendy bars are in the 'lacemarket' area of the city. Having two large Universities - Nottingham Trent and Nottingham Uni, there are a great deal of students out on week day nights.
The music scene in the city is good and growing. Nottingham has some excellent venues in Nottingham Arena (also an iceskating rink), Rock City, The Bodega Social Club, Stealth and Rescue Rooms.
It could be argued that the city lacks green space, however its fairly small and the countryside (places like Sherwood Forest!) is never too far away. Wollaton Park and Wollaton Hall near the Uni is a fairly large park which hosts an annual music festival.
Transport in Nottingham is good. In the city centre everything is walkable - its not huge. The bus service to the suburbs is really good and averagely priced. Then theres also the trams which are always fun :)
I've managed to talk about Nottingham for a while now and not mention Robin Hood. Good going....
