St Marks’s Square is the focal point of Venice, at least for the tourist. It’s where you’ll find the Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, the campanile and some of Venice’s smartest cafes, bars and shops. Hotel Campiello is just 3 or 4 minutes walk from the square, so the location could hardly be handier. It’s almost next door to one of the most famous hotels in Venice, the Danieli, a palatial 5 star establishment where a double room will set you back more than €400 per night, even in November. In Italian campiello means “little square” so you won’t be surprised to learn that the hotel entrance is in a little square. Right by the San Zaccaria water bus stop a narrow alley leads off Riva degli Schiavoni (the main walkway alongside the lagoon) to the little square. Advantages: Location, decor and super-efficient concierge Disadvantages: Pricey for some
...and you're in the lagoon. The receptionist confirmed accidents do happen and she has personally witnessed two. So, I'm afraid, I have to recommend the vaporetto (water-bus) whether you arrive via Marco Polo airport or the railway station.
Location
The hotel is on the Riva degli Schiavoni, facing the lagoon, a stone's throw from the Bridge of Sighs and the Piazza San Marco. The nearest vaporetto stop is San Marco, literally outside the hotel. It will take you about twenty minutes by vaporetto to reach the hotel from Venice's only railway station, or the adjacent car-parks. I estimate a similar travel time from the airport.
Reception
The receptionists were prompt and efficient in effecting the registration although there was some vagueness about the type of room until it was entered. Checkout was smooth and there were no hidden...

...‘prosecco’ sparkling wine to turn it into a ‘dipso’s Slush Puppy – “Lush Puppy”?’.
Mmmmm, right tasty that!
DOING THE KULCHER BIT – Or “WHO LET THE DOGE OUT?”
I’m not big on this myself, as my remarks about Florence may have hinted, but I have to admit that Venice has the lot; palaces, churches, classic architecture, museums, and all in a uniquely-stunning World Heritage setting.
First things first, let’s list what we DID see.
PIAZZA SAN MARCO – well, it’s difficult to miss really, since we tended to walk across it every day. On three sides it has the feel of Madrid’s Plaza Mayor, but the open end gives a stunning view of the famous Campanile (bell-tower), visible for miles out to sea, the multi-domed Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, or Palazzo Ducale to give it its proper name.
The piazza is also well known for being flooded...
