Steamship shenanigans

Advantages: Entertaining period read
Disadvantages: The plot is a little thin

Hired to ensure that the 1907 maiden sailing of the Cunard steamship, The Mauretania, goes smoothly, George Porter Dillman and Genevieve Masefield blend in with the passengers of the first and second class. Initially, the only problems seems to be the buglary of a number of silver items, but Dillman thinks he knows who is responsible. Then there is a much bigger problem - a man goes missing, believed gone overboard, and the shipment of gold bullion, held under lock and key, has mysteriously disappeared. Could it have anything to do with a couple of Welsh miners in third class, planning to start a new life from nothing in the United States? Or are there higher class thieves on board? Review of Murder on the Mauretania - Conrad Allen

I could relate to this

Advantages: This is a good book to curl up with, on the beach, under a shade tree -just a good read!
Disadvantages: None - unless you don't like this style of book.

His beautiful sidekick, Genevieve Masefield, subtly helps whilst trying not to let other passengers on the liner know of her connection to him. The plot meanders with intrigue, making you constantly re-evaluate your previous thoughts on who, what, why? This is an excellent read, decently paced, with descriptive narrative combining with excellent characterizations. You can "see" these people, hear their voices. Allen's submersion of the reader into turn-of-the-century history is brilliant, and having sailed on the Queen Elizabeth 2 myself, I can identify with much of the scenarios that he ...

Sahara

Advantages: Well written, great photographs
Disadvantages: none

Written by the ex-Python, this book is the story of his journey through the surprisingly varied and liitle known countries that surround the well known Sahara Desert. Based on the TV series of the same name this book takes us through such countries as Libya, Mali and Mauretania. It also encapsulates the spirit of the early explorer as Palin reads from Mungo Park as he sails along the mysterious Niger. He visits Timbuktu and revels in the colonial splendour of this mysterious region. Highlights include an encounter with an musket wielding hunter, which almost ends Palin's journey, and a visit to a town where the buildings are made almost entirely out of mud. This wonderful book explores a region of the world that very few people ever consider visiting. Palin is, as usual, an enthusiastic and funny guide. The photographs by Basil ...
