Advantages: close but not too close to city centre Disadvantages: hotel was being renovated
Arriving at Lille in France we were soon able to catch a taxi to our hotel, which as we later found out was not too far to walk; but with baggage on the way home a taxi was still in order..
We arrived at the hotel about 9 pm on Wednesday evening and as we walked into the hotel there was nothing to differentiate it between other hotels owned by Novotel (Accor). We were given our rooms and we then agreed to meet our friends back in the ? after all it was Jame?s birthday!
Taking one of the two small lifts I was immediately able to tell that had my wheelchair been in its ?erect? position I and one other person would have been able to fit in the lift. Luckily they weren?t too busy ? in fact no one was using them.
We walked into our room and it was a typical Novotel room ?basic but clean, and 3 out of four of us determined that ...
Advantages: Near London by train, cosmopolitan feel, excellent transport connections, eating out, plenty to see Disadvantages: Dog poo
of the less formal bits of the city, like Rue Léon Gambetta, an ordinary shopping ?High Street? for ordinary people to buy ordinary things. Whilst it?s nice to wander the old quarter, predictably now turned over in a rash of ?twee-ness? to the sales of posh clothing, expensive watches and things you never knew you wanted, you do begin to wonder where the locals buy a box of matches or a roll of bog paper.

opposite the notre dame de la treille. The courtyard is lovely to relax in when the summer comes round.
You should also find time to visit the citadelle. there's a zoo and some gorgeous park areas. There's also a huge funfair situaed there all through the summer!
There's the 'soho' red light district of Lille which can be a bit seedy, but interesting enough (it's situated in the Gare LilleFlandres area) don't go there alone though, it can be a bit scary!
Getting to Lille is easy! for those on a budget there's 9hr coach which costs about £40 for an open return (meaning you can go for up to 6 months!) and then there's Eurostar which can take you direct from London in less than 2 hrs!!! (1hr 40 to be precise!) prices vary, and sometimes if you book in advance you can get tickets for about £50 rtn!
This place is one of my favourite ...
