...The A62, the “autoroute des deux-mers” runs from Bordeaux on the west coast to Narbonne on the south east coast of France. About half way along lies the insignificant Junction 8 which takes you along the D953 to Valence d’Agen and paradise!
If you turn off at Junction 8 you will enter the little known region of Tarn et Garonne, bounded by those rivers on the south and their more famous brother, the Lot some 20 miles to the north. But beware! This landscape is unlike any other in France. Ignore the French road signs, squint perhaps just a little and you are in Tuscany.

Advantages: It's in Carcassonne Disadvantages: Not many flights
...Salvaza Airport, locally known as the airport of Carcassonne, "pays Cathare", is situated 4 kilometres west of Carcassonne, just by the Narbonne-Toulouse motorway. There is a commercial zone just next to it, with a supermarket, furniture shop, MacDonald's, and a few hotels. The first thing that is striking when you reach the airport, is its small size. 100 square metres altogether with the departures, and arrival areas.

Advantages: forests and nature Disadvantages: very little public transport
...I discovered this part of France by sheer luck. In fact, I'd taken the wrong road, but seeing as on my map i could see that i was in the right direction, but on a smaller road, i decided to pursue my journey.

L'Herault is a french department which stretches from 30 kilometers east of Montpellier, to 10 kilometers north of Narbonne along the Mediterranean coast, and approximately 60 kilometers inland. This coast line is known as the "golf de Lion". L'Herault's department number is 34. It is in the "Languedoc Rousillon" region.
The "Languedoc-Rousillon" is France's biggest region, stretching from Avignon (95 kms east of Montpellier) to Millau, (114 kms north of Montpellier) and right down to the Spanish border and west until Andorra.
