As my son is studying at SheffieldUniversity we have sampled a few of the hotels Sheffield has to offer and the Novotel is one we have used more than once.
For anyone visiting Sheffield for the first time, the traffic system can be a little confusing so the situation of the Novotel makes it attractive to visitors. Once you've negotiated Park Square and actually managed to turn left into Arundel Gate you have to drive passed the hotel on the opposite side of the road, go round the roundabout and come back along Arundel Gate the opposite way to gain entrance to the hotel. Each time we've visited there have been roadworks on or near the roundabout and this can cause problems. The hotel is clearly visible when you approach but the inside lane is buses only so you have to cut across the bus lane to get into the hotel.
Parking is either underneath the hotel or a few spaces are available directly outside the door.
It is quite a modern building and across the road from Sheffield Hallam University. The heated swimming pool is on your right as you enter the building and a flight of stairs straight ahead takes you up to reception, lobby, restaurant and bar. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly.
The rooms are quite spacious. Double or twin beds, sofa bed, tv, desk, hairdryer, bathroom and separate toilet. We have stayed in rooms overlooking the University and overlooking the Winter Gardens at the rear and both have been quiet.
Hotel guests have the use of a nearby Gym if required but unfortunately we have never had the time to take up this offer.
The bar area is comfortable and can get a little noisy, depending on the type of guests. The reception and lobby is spacious and affords access to the rear, which takes you into the centre of Sheffield, the Winter Gardens and the beautiful Peace Gardens.
We have only eaten breakfast in the hotel as we always eat out with our son when we visit but the menu is well priced and appears to offer a good if limited variety. Breakfast is buffet style and has a large and varied selection to choose from. Fresh fruit, cereals, continental, cooked breakfast, toast, muffins, croissants and tea or coffee is served in huge tea/coffee pots to go with the huge cups. There is also a selection of fresh juices and milk. Our last visit was in June 2004 and we noticed the restaurant had been redecorated and the whole set up had changed. It is much more modern now but it seems to have lost a little of its stateliness. One thing we found a little annoying was the constant hovering of the staff so they could whip away your plates (sometimes when you hadn't actually finished). But I think they were just eager to please.
I would recommend this hotel, as it is comfortable, clean and spacious. It provides free parking (which is a great advantage in Sheffield). It is also extremely well situated for everything. The Crucible is just along the road and all the shops, pubs and restaurants are close by. The railway and bus stations are quite close too, just across the road and behind the Hallam University. The wonderful supertram system is just along the road and this will take you in each and every direction, for an extremely reasonable fare. It goes to Meadowhall Shopping Centre as well.
The cost of a double/twin room is £88 but we've always managed to get a good deal online and have never paid more than £70 including breakfast.
