The Scruffy Shoe Diaries THE SECOND HAND CITY

Advantages: See Opinion
Disadvantages: See Opinion

WHEREVER YOU WALK, history leaves the biggest footprint. Not just in books and museums; In the faces you see, the food you eat, the places you go to, the atmosphere that surrounds you when you walk down the street. Some places are immutably changed, uplifted and transformed, evolved and progressed by the passage of history. Elsewhere, there are places that seem glad simply to seek some sort of equilibrium between its peaks and troughs. Vientiane is one of those kinds of places. UPDATE 16-10-2002 Seeing as I've just made a return trip to the place, now would be a good time to update this opinion, when it's still fresh in my mind... and boy, does it need updating! Please refer to the end of the original piece (I quite like it and I don't want to break it up!) for more current information on Vientiane ...

Review of Vientiane (Laos)

Relax and dicover the local community

Advantages: Scenic location, enjoy the local surrondings
Disadvantages: Food.

I arrived excitedly in Laos at Vientiane airport from Hanoi to stay in this Eco-lodge resort just outside the capital. We spotted this place on the hostelworld website but choose to book directly with the resort as getting to the resort is a bit tricky. There is a local bus service which runs daily, However we preferred to arrange with the Eco-lodge to get collected from the airport for a small fee of $10. Arrival at the airport was easy and as with many of the south Asian countries you can get the required visa when you turn up to enter the country. The visa does require a picture, but we forgot that we had packed ours in the main language so got fined a whopping $1! Anyway after making our way through the easy immigration checks we had a friendly driver waiting for us and he drove us for about half an hour away from the capital to ...

A Big Day At The Sheffield Novotel!

Advantages: Excellent Food, Central Location.
Disadvantages: Poor Bar Service, Limited Parking.

When one of my best friends got married yesterday (Sunday 19th December 2005) the location that she chose was the Novotel in Sheffield. This location was chosen for the entire day, which included the Civil Wedding at 2.30pm, the meal afterwards at 4pm and the evening reception which started at 7.30pm. The first thing that I will say before I begin this review is that I live less than a 5 minute walk away from this Hotel, which is conveniently situated right in the middle of the city centre, so I didn't actually stay here. This review is therefore based on my own opinions as seen from a non paying guest. My friend was staying at the Novotel (with her sister) on the Saturday night as well as her Wedding night the following day so I first went to this Hotel on Saturday night for a pre wedding drink. FIRST IMPRESSIONS The Novotel ...
