Kandapola - A Unique hotel concept, where a tea factory built several decades ago during the British Raj has been converted Into a plush hotel - This most unusual hotel surrounded amisdt the misty mountains and the lush tea plantations of the Hill Country, offers a tranquil setting for a relaxing holiday A hotel of character and star-class, set in an emerald teascape 6,800 feet above sea level, only six degrees from the Equator. In the mountain range, which gave the world Pure Ceylon Tea, the hotel began as a factory built in the days of the British Raj. It has been converted so that much of the original style and machinery remains, a reminder of the past in perfect blend with innovations of the present. To stay at the Tea Factory is to experience a hotel like none other. Step into its reception, and you are where the factory*s leaf drying process was carried out. The atrium is latticed with steel and at its top, two giant wooden fans capped with brass remind you that the bedrooms are on floors that used to be the withering lofts. The tea packing room is now the hotel*s popular bar. Where tea was sifted and graded is the hotel*s fine restaurant of class - its modern kitchen used to be the engine room. The cuisine is definitely *my cup of tea*, whatever your preference. The withering lofts have been transformed into 57 bedrooms of cosy, carpeted comfort. Wood is the main material used, with doors, shelves and cupboards *plenty of them* left in their natural colours. The windows remain as they were in their original square wooden frames and these provide a glorious view from any bedroom or bathroom. Each bathroom has a bathtub and shower. Every bedroom is heated and has a built-in dressing table with wrap around mirrors, and beds designed for a perfect night*s sleep. The view from the rooms at the front of the hotel is a wonderful panorama of tea and at its rear, a peaceful pastoral scene of hamlets, hills and forest, as well as more tea meets your gaze. Nuwara Eliya is full of the beautful scenery, falling waterfalls and more that you could expect from one of Sri Lanka's extreme areas. It's long winding roads lead all the way up the mountatins through valleys of Tea Estates. There are many hotels in Nuwara Eliya, near the center of town. One of the most famous and luxurious is the Grand Hotel. It is an old colonial house which has been transfered into a massive hotel with a brand new wing just added on with a gym, sauna, shops and more. Nuwara Eliya also boasts some other great hotels which are of equal stature to that of the Grand Hotel. It does get a bit chilly up in the hills of Sri Lanka, so take some warm clothes.
Nuwara Eliya is the best place for the people who are lookinf for a releif for their minds messed because of the maddening noises of traffic and heat. The salubrious climate and brethtaking landscape create a soothing and peaceful heaven for us. There are so many majestic waterfalls.

Advantages: Friendly agency with a personal touch, good links with placement countries and wide variety of programmes Disadvantages: some communication problems over what was included in my prize (a minor quibble)
or an administrator) as well as an EFL teacher. In SriLanka, you can work on a turtle sanctuary. There are fees for all of the programmes as well as for the placement. However, once you are there your on-site accomodation and food is free - the quality depends on the location!
There is also a co-ordinator based in the country of your placement. Our one was a twenty-something Hindu emigre from the Sind region of Pakistan, who was a garment manufacturer (although I never saw him do any work!)and western-educated. He was very helpful and always arranged for us to have a good weekend in Colombo or Unawatuna (although his travelling experience of SriLanka seemed to be limited to Colombo, Galle and NuwaraEliya!). He also had good links and contacts with the placements.
There is the option of going on a week long tour, costing around Ģ125. It is a nice ...

Advantages: A little bit beautiful, interesting and friendly Disadvantages: A little bit unchallenging
earlier in our travels and encountered again by chance on our way up there ? he is German, she Belgian ? who can scarcely believe their eyes. We have to pay for temporary membership, although it is hardly expensive at 60 rupees (35p) a head, 240 rupees for the four of us. I produce a 500 rupee note and the man on reception promises to bring me the change in the lounge, but in the event I have to chase it up when we depart. The tea is slow to arrive and unappetising on arrival, unlike the food at the St Andrews, which is excellent.
NuwaraEliya is the hill-station to which the British rulers of SriLanka used to decamp en masse to escape the Hot Weather every year. Despite throwbacks like the Hill Club, it retains a curious period charm ? with some characterful colonial-style architecture, tea plantations still using 19th century ...
