Ohana's restaurant is actually located within Walt Disney World, at the Polynesian hotel, situated near to the Magic Kingdom (the monorail from the park actually goes directly to the hotel). However even if you are not visiting a Disney park it is well worthmaking a detour to sample this unique restaurant.
Ohana's literally means a place of family, laughter and sharing. The room itself is large and open and has views across the lagoon to the Magic Kingdom (this is particularly lovely at night-time when the lights are dimmed so that you can watch the evening fireworks.
On entering the restaurant we were introduced to some of the staff and shown the Hawaian sign for welcome! Now for the important stuff - the food. The menu here is an all-you-can-eat feast. The tables are solid with a revolving middle section. Upon arrival at our table our appetisers were waiting for us. These included coleslaw with honey lime dressing, coriander chicken wings, sweet and sour pork dumplings and stir fried rice. They will refill these as often as you want and you proceed to the main course whenever you are ready.
If there are any vegetarians in your party they would have to stop now because the main course is basically meat! In the middle of the restaurant there is a 16ft open pit upon which 3ft skewers of shrimp, beef, turkey, pork etc are cooked and brought to your table. The meat is very good quality and has been marinated in a variety of combinations of soy, ginger, lemongrass etc. Of course the rice etc from the appetisers are still present and can now be combined with the meat.
The meal ends with fresh pineapple with caramel sauce for dipping. You can order other deserts at an extra charge. An extensive wine and cocktail list is available (the banana daquiri was particularly nice).
However the thing that make Ohana's that extra bit special for us was the entertainment. Polynesian singers circulate and the children are encouraged to participate in a number of games. My two had a great time taking part in a race where they had to push coconuts with a brush. Of course everyone got a prize.
The menu is not cheap at $20.99 per adult and $9.99 per child but it was certainly a different experience and a beautiful setting in which to eat.
OK folks I'll try to take a break from the Disney reviews for a little while!

We're about to go to Orlando (staying in one of the WD resorts) and will be sure to visit this restaurant - sounds just great; must remember not to eat at lunchtime that day!

I know that dining out with kids can be stressy, but they seem to have solved that problem even for hyperactive tykes

Sounds lovely, I never visited this hotel when I went. It's time to re-visit Orlando soon. Just come back from california, I prefer Florida.
