Being from Cumbria (the county which houses the world famous English Lake District) I have an extremely positive great deal of affection for Center Parcs and especially the Oasis Holiday Village. My own father used to work here as the manager of the cleaning department, a department which still maintains top quality I must add.
Anyways, since the dreaded credit crunch British holidaymakers have chosen alternative resolutions to flying abroad. The British holiday is now as popular as ever, with places like Butlins and Haven filling up like the beaches on a bank holiday weekend. Whilst less known than the latter two, Center Parcs has its own rendition of a holiday camp, though instead of focusing on bringing in people to coastal seaside resorts Center Parcs, in a welcome twist to the common holiday
camp, resorts to setting up in rural countryside areas. For this reason most of the activities on offer at Center Parcs (in this case Oasis) involve going off into the countryside or fells. Rock climbing, abseiling, gill scrambling, zip wiring, ropes courses, canoeing etc- its all on the agenda card. For that reason Center Parcs is very much more an adventure park (when compared to Butlins) The great thing about the location however is that a balance of activities means that you don't necessarily have to be super fit or young to enjoy what the place has to offer. The location means that even grandee/grandma can enjoy the holiday. Situated near Ulverston, Oasis Village is pretty much in the centre of the Lakes. Only a short bus ride to other attractions, such as Lake Windermere boat cruises, Aquarium Of The Lakes and South Lakes Wild Animal Park (a great zoo where I used to work) means that there is even more to do should you leave the actual resort.
The actual resort then- compact in terms of what to expect and relatively large. The accommodation is well looked after although this is on a basis of 'what you pay for is what you get.' Luckily even the standard chalets are comfortable and unlike the horrors you will find at Pontins and Haven offer a pleasant home-from-home feel. The center itself is what you would expect from a holiday camp- there is plenty to do (even including an amusements arcade) such as family evening shows, a (warm?!) swimming pool and of course the activities I mentioned above, but the location itself means that quite a bit of your time will probably be spent venturing off into the Lake District so you will probably have to plan carefully to fit everything in. The staff here are also nice and cheery which makes a change in these sorts of places. Catering really depends on what your tastes are. If you go for the half-board option then you will find a nice restaurant offering pre-ordered food. If you go for the cheaper option which is self catering then you are left to your own devices. There are numerous food outlets at Center Parcs, but these tend to be quite expensive. The same can be said for the gift shops. Given that, most tourist attractions in the Lake District are also heftily priced so as a downside you might say staying at this resort is relatively more expensive than some of the others, but this can be forgiven seeing how the quality of service almost envelopes any of the other holiday camps in the UK.
In fact, just one of these parks could knock out an army of Pontins resorts. Thats how different the quality is. Whilst Center Parks is clean, good for families, has plenty to offer and is a place you might find yourself coming back too Pontins is a place that will send you running for the hills in a hygiene mask. Maybe it seems unfair to compare the two seeing as though they are parks aimed at different people (Pontins seems to be aimed at those more interested in taking it easy whereas Center Parcs relies on you to actually get up and get involved) however in terms of quality Center Parcs cannot be matched. Only the King of the holiday camps which is Butlins stands up to the role of competence, but like I said Center Parcs is aimed at a slightly different audience so I will not compare them.
I would recommend Center Parcs as an alternative to Butlins, especially if you have already done one of the Butlins resorts. The prices are pretty similar but the variety of outdoor activities is certainly higher at Center Parcs. It is a place the whole family can enjoy. A place where you can let yourself go, explore and still come together to have a good knees up at the bar. And not forgetting it sits on the perimeter of one of the most naturally beautiful areas on the planet- surely that has got to have your mouth watering?

Good review. I love the Lakes, we were there a couple of weeks ago, sadly it rained :( but we were prepared for it and had a great time anyway.
