Oaxaca (Mexico)

There are many good, sensible reasons to visit Oaxaca (pronounced wa-ha-ca, not oh-axe...a car). I went, however, as a spur of the moment thing. Mexico City had shut down in an attempt to eradicate swine flu, and though I appreciated the 10 days paid leave we had been given at work, the lack ... Read review

A Treat For The Senses

Advantages: The air here smells of chocolate!
Disadvantages: Enough for a couple of days, but no more

...good, sensible reasons to visit Oaxaca (pronounced wa-ha-ca, not oh-axe...a car). I went, however, as a spur of the moment thing. Mexico City had shut down in an attempt to eradicate swine flu, and though I appreciated the 10 days paid leave we had been given at work, the lack of stuff to do in the city was driving me a little bit crazy. So, I booked a flight and 2 days later jumped on a plane to Oaxaca.

...tourist centre, you can find Oaxaca on most of the international hotel booking websites. My first stop was the tourist office for a map and some advice, but unfortunately it was shut, so I ended up at a private tour office instead. There are a number of tours available to places of interest in the state of Oaxaca, and I booked one to travel the next day. I asked here for a map and was directed to a small pod in the centre of the Alameda, where the ... more

History awaits in Oaxaca

Advantages: loads of history
Disadvantages: a whole lot of walking

...isn't any different. Oaxaca is a moderate sized state and is located on the very bottom of Mexico's west side. In fact, it's so far near the bottom, that it's closer to Guatamala than it is to Mexico City, which is fairly close to the middle of the country itself. What you need! When traveling to Mexico, I think it's very important that you bring certain items. One item in particular is bottled water. When I say bottled water, I don't mean bring ...
...still quite impressive. Oaxaca City Probably the best place to visit while in Oaxaca is Oaxaca City. Known for it's amazing museums and cultural exhibits, Oaxaca City, was a whole lot of fun. This area is home to the regional museum. In this museum, you find ceremonial dress, cultural wood working, different tools of the area, and of course weapons. Lots of stuff in this museum, a definite must see. Another place that has to be seen is one of the ...

Beautiful but crowded

Advantages: Beautiful colonial town, great shopping, near mountains and beaches
Disadvantages: Very touristy and relatively expensive, lots of hawkers

Oaxaca is a stunning colonial town, with lots of shady squares and colonial buildings. It is a key tourist destination, and so quite expensive, but well worth a visit. I'd recommend it more for holiday makers than backpackers due to the price and ambience, but noone would regret a visit. It's a city for strolling around and taking a coffee in, as well as shopping, in particular for crafts. In the warm evenings, the town square is packed with people ...
...on everything to do with Oaxaca - nobody could get bored here and it's great for kids. There are also good displays of modern art in a number of museums. Nearby are pyramids and ruins, such as Mitla and Monte Alban - while not as impressive as Teotihuacan or Chiapas they are worth a look, in particular Monte Alban for the views. The beaches near Oaxaca are stunning, and this is a good town to stay in for a few relaxing days before continuing on ...

Zoë 1 : Trip Advisor 0

Advantages: An interesting collection of pieces on display. Free (I think)
Disadvantages: Not what you might expect from the museum's name

"If I could express with a single word what it is that distinguishes Tamayo from other painters, I would say without a moment's hesitation: Sun. For the sun is in all his pictures, whether we see it or not." - Nobel Prize-winning poet Octavio Paz Now I see sun every day living in Mexico city, though it often comes from behind a layer of smog, but I was intrigued to see sun on canvas - lots of canvases to be precise. Rufino Arellanes Tamayo was a Zapotecan Indian painter born in Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico, to Mestizo parents. I don't even know what all that means, but it sounds impressive. I knew nothing at all about him before moving to Mexico, but quickly discovered he has his own art museum on the edge of Chapultepec Park. * Nike trainers made from cardboard. * A life size yellow VW Beetle made from hand-stitched Vinyl ...

Praise the Saint!

Advantages: Excellent International Food selection.
Disadvantages: Some tourists will still find it geared towards locals, but that isn't so.

. In the farmer's market alone, you can browse herbal medicines, emu oil products and incense. In the summer there is honey on the comb (comes in a tightly sealed plastic container) and home-baked scones, cookies and loaf cakes suitable enough for any visitor to munch on as they head off to the Toronto Islands or the CN Tower or even the beaches. I'm not sure if she's still there but occasionally there is a woman who makes the most delicious corn-flour tortillas in a truly authentic fashion - not of the "American" variety, but just the way I've had them in Oaxaca, Mexico. In the main market, which is open on weekdays as well, there are dozens of snack foods - for example: freshly baked Montreal-style bagels, which if you ask them to slather on their delicious cream cheese can only be considered a MUST-try. Montreal-style bagels are ...

Review of St Lawrence Market, Toronto

One of Mexico's Hidden Jewels

Advantages: Quite, beautiful and cheap !
Disadvantages: A bit difficult to get to for the unseasoned traveller

Puerto Escondido. I would say that this destination is one of my favourites. Puerto Escondido (meaning ‘hidden port’ in Spanish) is a small town on the Pacific coast of Southern Mexico. It has become popular with surfers due to its most excellent surf (dude!), but is as yet little known, and therefor remains ‘hidden’. You can travel by bus from either Oaxaca (12hrs), Acapulco (3 or 4hrs) or Mexico City (loads of hrs!) all have airports, and you can occasionally get really cheap flights (I did!). Upon arrival (most likely by bus) you will disembark at the top of the hill a few kilometres from the beach area.. You can take a taxi (for about 20 pesos) down to the beach area, where there’s a stretch of Hotels, bars and restaurants. My girlfriend and I stayed in a place called Hotel Rockaway at the end ...
