Right, I think I came here when I was about 9, it was my second ski trip, and my first holiday without my parents. We stayed in the Snoiw White hotel, and only had to cross the road to get to ski school.
The hotel was quite good, with great food, and excellent child care. However I remember the kindergarten as being horrible. I'm sure the ladies there were mean to me :( lol.
But hey, the skiing was good, with some nice gentle slopes with drag lifts ... ...the top. There was also a large gondola. The resrort isnt huge, but there is more than enought to keep the average skiier happy for a week or two. The Ecole du Ski is well known, as being one of the best in the area. The ski school slopes are extensive, and have lots of plastic bunnies, and obstacles. At the end of the week we had a race, and I still ahve a medal for coming 2nd. I dont know how it was for parents, but i think it is probably a child ...

Advantages: High for Austria, good snow record Disadvantages: More expensive than he rest of the region, not as 'charming' as some Austrian resorts
We visited Obertauern for New Year 03/04. I picked the resort as the height (1700-ish) was good for Austria so expected snow cover to be mnore reliable, considering it was quite an early holiday.
We travelled independently and flew into Salzburg airport (Ryanair from Stansted or connections from Amsterdam and Frankfurt, among others) from Manchester (via Amsterdam for us!). From there we took a bus into the city centre, and then two trains to Radstadt. ... ...and loaded all our luggage (including skis) into the back of the minibus they had sent for us. So it wasn't a quick journey but it wasn't that hard and was very efficient.
The resort is situated on a pass which kind of runs parallel to the main Salzburg / Villach motorway, and driving south from the village you end up in Carinthia (Kaernten), Austria's most southerly province.
