Ocean, Nottingham

My sister moved to Nottingham in September to start a law degree and as we are close it was quite a shock to the system for me. We said we would try and get together when we could and so my cousin and I went down to Nottingham for a night out with my sister and her friends back in November last year. When I came back to university this year back in October, I found out that the Nottingham Trent Uni night had been moved to Ocean, a club I had never been to before. Ocean is well known for Trent students due to it hosting the night for societies on Wednesday nights but not being in one means I didn’t go. I must admit that I love Ocean, despite the fact that it is probably the most shamelessly cheesy (and dirty) clubs in Nottingham, it is still always a good laugh. Venue: In terms of size it is big, very big. It has two dancefloors, one very big on the ground floor as you walk in, one very small one upstairs; four bars - three downstairs and one upstairs; a seperate chill out room on the ground floor and ample seating upstairs. When I arrived at Nottingham university, I found myself looking through the nightlife magazines to see where I could go out after 11pm on a friday night for cheap! The answer I found was Ocean. I've been there several times now, and it's never been more than £3 to get in, and most bottles and draft pints are £1.50, which is great for a club. I went there expecting cheesy music all night, which is what you usually get in cheap clubs, but I found myself dancing all night to hard house, trance, garage, drum & bass, some of which I'd heard and some that I hadn't, but all top quality tunes! Ocean is the standard haunt on Friday nights of Nottingham University students. It also holds the occasional 'Full Moon Partys' and also Nottingham University Cocktail Society events. Some good points about Ocean: Due to its fairly simple layout, its usually easy to find people you know, so going to the loo and coming back out and being completely lost and by yourself isnt usually a problem (even in worse states...) People in Ocean tend to be fairly unpretentious. You usually don't have to wait too long to be served. The music... could be a negative or a positive depending on your taste ... more
