Well, its hard to know where to start. Right from the beginning is a good bet I think. I will try to be as honest as possible on all aspects of the cruise.

We booked a 2 week cruise and flew from Newcasle on 9th May 2006. The flight was a little cramped but then again its only for a couple of hours. We flew with Thomas Cook airlines and arrived in Palma in the evening. The first thing to hit you was the heat. It was 8c in Newcastle and in Palma it was hitting 25c. Everything went very well and ran smoothly. One little thing. Its a 15 minute walk to reclaim your cases at Palma airpost, therefore, if you have walking difficulties speak to the rep and get a buggy ride to the baggage reclaim area. Once you have collected your bags you will be met by an Ocean Village Rep who directs your to a fleet of busses ready and waiting to take your for a 20 minute ride to your ship. This is when the excitement really starts. The sheer size of this beauty is amazing if youve never cruised before. Something like the length of 2 football pitches and in the region of 65000 tons.

This was the last time we seen our cases until we reached our cabin. Once off the bus we qued for a few minutes in a 'large shed' type building where we were given our cruise cards ect. By this time everyone was getting excited and couldnt wait to embark. Once past the photographer (who, believe me, you will encounter a lot on your cruise) it was a blast of alcohol gel on the hands (another thing you will get used to every time you go into a restaurant or gym on the ship) and up the gangway. This took us straight to deck 5 where the main reception area was and it looks very impressive. We were in cabin E142 which was an outside cabinn deck 6, therefore not far to go.

On entering the cabin we impressed straight away with the size of it. Far bigger than we had expected and it was also very well cleaned. I would class it as being on par with many 3* hotel rooms I have stayed in. The bed was a whopper. Well it was really 2 singles pushed together and done the job very well.

Right, now for the food. There are 4 restaurants on board. the waterfront and plantations are where you have most of your meals from breakfast to dinner. We liked to eat in the Waterfront as it was better laid out and felt a little better than Plantations which was more like a cafe really. Plantations is where the 24 hour food is. When main meals are not served, like at 1.00am you can grab a snack but you do get bored after a whlie with the same things, burgers, hot dogs ect. Mind, if you like deserts youre in for a treat. Plenty to choose from. Our only real concern with plantations was sometimes the food had been out a little too long and was only warm at the best. This also occured in the Waterfront but not as often. As we were there there for 2 weeks we also tried La Luna and the Bistro twice each and believe me, the small extra charge was well worth it. The first week James Martin was on board which we had not expected but sadly and much to Dawns dissapointment, even after hours of stalking the place we did not see him. The Bistro has 2 menus which change weekly and the food is fantastic. The whole set up is in a completly different world compared to the Waterfront and Plantations. The brochure stated there was a cover charge of about £15.00 each to dine here. We infact found the price to be £12.50 or if you book in between 6 and 6.30 you could take advantage of the Early Bird offer of only £9.50 each. Well worth every penny. The same can be said of La Luna. we dined there twice and found the service to be excellent along with the food.

On to the entertainment bit. A bit hitty missy I thought. Some days you couldnt fit it all in and others were a bit quiet. The Abba tribute and Queen tribute were fantastic. Most of the singers were great. Celina and Keely were excellent. Others like Jonathan Black.....well the less said about his singing the better. He dissapeared the second week. Not sure if he was sacked or someone pushed him over the side. Another great show was Pulse and the Moon show which was performed by the Freedom2move team. Outstanding is the only description. A truly fantastic performance. The resident band was also excellent. Jet set I think was there name. They could turn their hand to any tune and it sounded great. As I said before, the entertainment could be a bit hitty missy. Some days were action packed and others, there was nothing to do til evening. This didnt bother me much as I spend most free days on deck 14 topping up my tan. It looks fantastic by the way. Such a poser! and the whole 14 days, except the last day was burning hot sun. Always between 25c and 35c. Fantastic!!! On some reviews I have seen people complaining about the lack of sun loungers. I have to admit on certain days, especically when not in port, the sun decks on 12 and 14 were busy but if you look hard enough you will find a bed and some space. On days when in port, if you decide to stay on board you have a huge choice where you want to lie down as most people have got off the ship.

The ship also held several art auctions. Im a person who has never been into art, however, my credit card took a £3500 hit after buying some Peter Max and Wyland fine art. Its still causing arguments in the house but I see it as an investment.....hopefully.

Right, a bit about some of the ports we got off at. First stop was Tunis. How can I describe this. Well, a toilet would be a good likeness. You can play a game of 'count the dead cats' when you cross the road. Well, its not that bad really but out of all the places I would say it was the dirtiest one and you will get people right in your face trying to sell you tat. If that doesnt bother you go for it.

Next for us was Genoa. We tried the 'taste of Italy' tour. It cost £45.00 each and we were bussed to a local restaurant and taught how to make real italian food before eating it. This was followed by a trip to the town of Rapallo where we had an hour to walk along the beack and take in the sights. Not a bad day at all we thought and by this time my tan was getting even better!

Our next port where we disembarked was Barcelona. Being completly lazy by now we opted for the 'Easy Barcelona' tour which was a 3 hour bus tour around the entire city including the stadium where the 1992 olypics were. Again a good tour and as usual the guides spoke very good english.

We decided to leave the next trips until the following week as my ship account was looking very unhealthy, what with the art auctions ect. I am sure my bank manager tried calling my mobile a few times. Oh well.

We opted for the 'pisa trolly train' tour as our next venture at a cost of £36 each. This was a bit of a let down as were did not set off until an hour late due to the previous tour running late. Something to do with a lady getting locked in a toilet for nearly an hour. Strange but true apparantly. This meant we were rushed around Pisa and had only 10 minutes for shopping instead of the promised hour which meant no real sightseeing or gift shopping could be done. A few people must of complained on our return as we received a letter the following day letting us know that all the passangers on the trip would receive a full refund. Not that bad after all then we thought.

Our last trip was in Corsica. This was to a Tortoise park and then to a small town for an hours shopping. We both agreed that this was the best trip of the holiday and at only £22 each it was a snip. Corsica is a real lovely island and we found the locals very friendly indeed and if you still need to get those last minute presents there were a good few shops selling those all important tatty things we all bring home for the loved ones.

Right as none of these paragraphs seem to be in any order I will mention the shops and facilities on board. First the Bazzar. This is where you can stock up on booze and ciggs. On Wednesdays you even get a further 15% off ciggs meaning most brands were only £14.50 for 200. Cheaper than anywhere else I found. The bottles of spirits were okay but heres a little tip. When you dock in Barcelona get off the ship and in the terminal building is a Duty Free shop. We got a litre bottle of Smirnoff Blue Vodka and a litre of Southern Comfort and it was less tham £17 for both. What a bargin. Only snag is, if you take it on board the ship they will take it off you until your last night when you get it back. This souldnt matter if it for home use. While the ship is sailing all the shops are open and the emporium have special offers on most days. To be honest though, we didnt find the prices anything to write hone about. Aftershave, clothes ect were the same as here and in some cases more expensive.

The last thing I can think of is the bars. Connexions seemed to be where most people hung out. Most nights you will find singing there or the comediens. Its not a huge place and seats are limited. Best bet is to get there an hour before the acts start or you have no chace of getting a seat. Same goes for the Marquee. Get in early or get a crap view of the stage. I cant really say much about the other bars as we rarly used them, other than the Oval. This is set up like a traditional english pub. Great if your feeling home sick.....aye right!!!

Well I think thats most of it covered. Now the dreaded bad bits. Well there wasnt much really. Other than the food sometimes being only warm instead of hot and the ocassional dodgy singer the holiday was about the best we have had. Our only real concern was on the last day. We had to be out the room by 8.30am and out flight was not until 6.15pm which mean carrying your hand luggage around the ship with you all day. This was the only day it rained and that put a stop to my tanning sessions on deck. There was no entertainment that day and it dragged a little especially as our flight back to Newcastle was delayed by a further 4 hours which meant we had nowhere to freshen up or rest like you would in your room. Oh yes and one thing to point out is the public toilets. Hmmm If you can inmaging over 1000 people leaving the ship that day and only 7 toilets around the ship. Things got a little busy and at one stage all the toilets became blocked. Not a pretty sight I can tell you. The vision of floating turds will stay with me for a while lol.

On the whole we both found this to be a really good holiday and good value for money. We got an outside cabin and it cost under £2000 for us both for 2 weeks. My advice is to start a diet weeks before going though. I put on 9lb and Dawn refuses to even get on the scales. There is a gym on board which we vowed to use daily. In fact it lasted for 3 days until we got sick of it and resorted to the sun loungers instead. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday with no rules on how you dress for dinner and you like to wake up to a new place eackhday then go for it. We enjoyed it and will be booking next year again. One last thing I forgot to mention, the staff on board. They were lovely people who always had a smile and were very friendly anf helpful.

Loved reading your review, loads of info and well written. I think your attitude is the correct one for cruising, especially your 'toilet humour'
