The cinema has always been an expensive pastime, and never more so that recently, with the lowest adult price at Odeon now being £5.20, yes FIVE POUNDS TWENTY!! This precious cash (equivalent to half an hours work on the average UK wage) will buy you 30 minutes of trailers, and a film – varying in quality. It seems that the film itself is becoming less of an attraction, and the cinema chains are seeing the ad as a more important part of the cinema experience. Of course, this advertising does keep prices down, but not nearly as much as we should like. Most Odeon cinemas have undergone a refit in recent years, bringing in luxury eating and snack facilities. For example my local cinema in Taunton (the only cinema in Taunton), has a Hagan Daz ice cream parlour, a hot dog counter, not to mention numerous beverages and snacks. Needless to say these products will set you back a few pounds, with a 3-scoop portion of ice cream costing around £5, and a small drink about £1.40!! With the need for only one or two cinemas in any one town, one chain usually has the monopoly, meaning it can charge what it likes to customers. My advice to you it to wait until the film comes out on video, or don’t enter the cinema until 20 mins after the film supposedly begins, then you will miss all the ads!

I pay child fares still for about £4.80, which is alright because we can just sneak into a load off different screens. Which is slightly illegal... but still. Popcorn and that is SOOOO expenisive, i just get ice cream and buy a drink from woolworths, but it'll still cost me around £10, which is all my weekly pocket money. Which completely sucks.

Good op Lee - I don't object too much to having to pay money to see a film - after all there are plenty of ways to check out a film in advance to see if you are going to like it. Here in London, £5.20 is the equivalent of perhaps 2 - 3 drinks in a pub so you would spend that on a night out anyway. However, the price of the extras, the popcorn, drinks and sweets etc. is a complete rip off. I think the profit on popcorn is something like 800 - 1000%! Take my advice, go to the nearest sweet shop and stock up before you go. You're not supposed to take sweets and drinks in to most cinemas, but if you take a bag wih you who's gonna know?
