I boarded a taxi and said "odeon please" and found myself right outside it in about 5 minutes, the journey having cost only £3.20, a bonus. It is a fairly large building and i expected the screens to be similarly proportioned, which isn't quite the case....

The street the cinema is on, New Street, seemed to have pretty much everything you would expect from a high street and food is not a problem here with a KFC, Burger King, Pizza Hut and McDonalds all within spitting distance of the cinema (this is helpful as food in cinema's always seems to be sold at exorbitant prices!!).

I was in Birmingham last weekend and on Saturday night i decided it would be a good idea to go and do something, as i had the opportunity to in a large city (unlike where i live, here a good evening consists of watching cattle ((those that haven't been burned on a pire)) wandering aimlessly around). I didn't much fancy going for a drink as over-indulgence on the Friday night left me cursing anything alcoholic for at least a day. I decided that i would go and see a film.

I got myself a ticket, £4.50, pretty reasonable i thought. Then, as i had half an hour to kill before the film, i wandered up the street to have a much needed McDonalds. My film was showing on screen 8. Before i tell you about what was awaiting me inside the doors, i will firstly stress that my cinema-going is not the most prolific and i have only ever been to 2 cinemas before this one, one in my local town of average size and one at Teeside Park with gargantuan screens and the most comfortable chairs outside of DFS. Having said this, i was shocked when i entered screen 8.... It was a tiny rood, with about 40 seats maximum, the screen was about as big as my next door neighbours telly. However, the film was good and the place was, at least, clean and tidy. Sound quality was not exceptional but quite adaquate, at least it wasn't too loud (unlike Teeside, where i think most of the regulars must be hard of hearing).
I cannot comment on the other screens, but the one i was in, screen 8 was tiny and pretty substandard. Perhaps this is what you get when you cram 13 (i think) screens into one building?? I also would say that this is probably why it is difficult for these cinemas in the centre of towns to compete with their out-of-town counterparts, they do not have the space to provide huge multi-screen affairs. However, they could have gone to a bit more trouble where the seats were concerned, not the most comfortable by any stretch of the imagination and pretty constrictive in the leg-room department.
All in all, i think the term is "not bad", but neither, unfortunately, was it good.
Advantages: easy to get to Disadvantages: cramped and smells musty.
The Birmingham Odeon is perhaps the most conveninet to get to, if you live in Brum or are travelling in, but not the most convenient to sit in. here's a few of the pros and cons.
Transport - by car of bus, this cinema is very accesible, making it ideal for people like me who travel in from outside the city. It's only about five minutes walk from New Street Station. Coming in by car it's a very different story - you would have to park up and pay ... ...- as the town centre Odeon has no car park of its own.
The foyer is reasonably large and pleasant, but from experience you can be kept a while waiting for tickets. the staff are not very prompt and for 8pm showings, the queues can be very long. The building has several stories, with a reasonable distribution of toilets. it all smells a bit old and musty. the seats are small and cramped, most of the screens are not that big. The best place to sit ...

Advantages: Handy location, lots of screens Disadvantages: Dingy, lots of kids
...you go to Birmingham, the Odeon is the most centrally located cinema and therefore the most popular. It's situated on New Street, where many bus routes travel through and indeed there are many bus stops right outside. The Cinema itself has recently had a major refurbishment and the foyer area looks a lot better now. It used to be quite dingy but now it is well lit and has a much classier look to it. However, the rest of the cinema is somehwat dingy ... ...kids who seem intent on spoiling the film. It does seem quite pricey aswell. They do have a fair few sceens though and they do show most major releases and some minor releases. The facilities are usually clean but I can't help but feel that the whole place needs another major overhaul. Probably worth a visit though. ...

Advantages: City Centre location Disadvantages: Screen 1 is inadequate, the interior is shabby
Given the 'Mad about film' or somesuch nonsense that the cinema was (is?) using as its strapline I thought I'd return to the venue I last visited when it was host to bands playing gigs. The interior was as dowdy and tired looking as I remember it, but not sufficiently so to imbue it with character (as is the case with the Electric). We watched Sleepy Hollow (so it was a while back) and what was glaringly obvious from the outset was the keystoning ... ...screen). I complained about this afterwards (my partner hanging around whispering 'leave it', but sometimes you just feel pedantic) and after seeing two people who couldn't grasp what the problem was I finally met up with the projectionist who admitted that Screen 1 was constructed in such a way that it was not possible to achieve a flat image and that vertical lines would appear to bend, particularly at the edges). Now, if I was 'mad about film', ...

...Then I went to the Odeon on New Street the night before last to see Charlie's angels. Great film (see my review - Angel Delight) bad cinema. I am roughly 6' tall which as about average these days for a 19 year old male, ie me. However, the seats appear to have been designed to fit someone of 4' in height, which may well have been fine when they were designed, but not now. Also, the armrests on the seats were so high that I couldn't put my arm around ...

Advantages: Good sized screens, great auditoriums, caters for everyone, Disadvantages: Popcorn sometimes cardboardy, expensive chocolate treats,
I am a huge cinema fan, and living in the centre of Birmingham for the last couple of years has meant putting up with Odeon Birmingham. Needless to say, I was very happy to discover the brand spanking new Odeon in Liverpool One,
Odeon Liverpool One
Odeon is actually the largest cinema chain in the UK, created by Oscar Deutsch in 1928. Some say that the name comes from Ancient Greek, others say that it comes from the motto Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation.
There are currently... a lot of Odeon cinemas across the UK (I tried to count, but it's a lot!). The website has a cinema finder to help you locate your nearest. For this review I shall be talking about Odeon, Liverpool ONE.
When Liverpool ONE was redeveloped, the city centre Odeon branch was relocated here. The entrance can be found ...
Advantages: large cinema, night screening, many restaurants Disadvantages: no parking around
Odeon cinema complex in Kingston Upon Thames is a favourite destination for families, couples, groups and individuals from all over the area/county. It is one of the biggest cinemas around and it has got a choice of restaurants, bars and 12 screens which makes it easier with choosing from current movies.
The complex is orientated oposite the Kingston train station and its short distance to high street. It is busy area and always buzzing. When you walk in through glass door you can either go upstairs using escalator or lift or downstairs.
The ground floor has a restaurant during the day and bar in the night. I think they have got evening restaurant in separate area from tables when youngsters usually drink before hitting the nightclub Oceana next door.
Lower level has got Bowling and other entertainment with bar and fast food ...

Advantages: there wasn't any! Disadvantages: no food or drink, dirty, screens didn't work, didn't show any of the top movies
we wanted to see.
From the outside, the cinema doesn't seem as impressive or big compared to the Vue cinema I usually go to in Cambridge. We walked through the doors, to find a large, virtually empty room. There was a really old arcade machine to the right, and to the left a small counter where you're meant to buy your tickets. There was no food or drink to be seen, and at the far end of the room was a few doors with numbers above them - obviously being the screen numbers. So at this point, we were both pretty unimpressed by what we saw. However, both wanting to see a movie after our morning swim, we looked up at the two plasma screens above the counter to find out what time our movie was being shown. Guess what? They weren't on! We saw a few other groups of people looking through a booklet with ODEON plastered on the front, so I walked ...
