Given the 'Mad about film' or somesuch nonsense that the cinema was (is?) using as its strapline I thought I'd return to the venue I last visited when it was host to bands playing gigs. The interior was as dowdy and tired looking as I remember it, but not sufficiently so to imbue it with character (as is the case with the Electric). We watched Sleepy Hollow (so it was a while back) and what was glaringly obvious from the outset was the keystoning of the image (ie it wasn't projected flat onto the screen). I complained about this afterwards (my partner hanging around whispering 'leave it', but sometimes you just feel pedantic) and after seeing two people who couldn't grasp what the problem was I finally met up with the projectionist who admitted that Screen 1 was constructed in such a way that it was not possible to achieve a flat image and that vertical lines would appear to bend, particularly at the edges). Now, if I was 'mad about film', I'd have spent some time making sure all the various screens shoehorned into the building were up to the job but this oversight didn't seem to be that important. I got a full refund but shall not be returning. PS - why do I have to rate popcorn quality? People have been known to watch entire films without once consumming a morsel of the stuff. So it might be OK or it might be pants - I couldn't tell you.
